Netflix has released the trailer for Schumacher ’94 – The Birth of a Legend, a German-language documentary focused on the season in which Michael Schumacher secured his maiden Formula 1 world championship. Produced by LEONINE Documentaries and directed by Christin Freitag, the feature will receive its global premiere on 2 October.
The trailer offers a preview of the film’s behind-the-scenes perspective on the 1994 campaign, a season presented as one of the most dramatic and consequential in Formula 1 history. It also introduces testimony from people who were close to Schumacher during the formative stage of his career.
Corinna Schumacher features prominently, providing personal insight into her husband and the beginnings of their relationship. The documentary also includes interviews with former Benetton team principal Flavio Briatore, former Formula 1 chief executive Bernie Ecclestone, Schumacher’s former manager Willi Weber, former F1 driver David Coulthard and German broadcasters Kai Ebel and Heiko Waßer.
Netflix’s synopsis places Schumacher’s breakthrough at the centre of a year marked by both sporting achievement and profound controversy. At 25, he won the first grand prix of the racing season in Brazil, setting the direction for what would become an extraordinary career.
“1994 marks a turning point in Formula 1 history: 25-year-old Michael Schumacher wins the first grand prix of the racing season in Brazil, setting the stage for an unprecedented career,” the synopsis states.
The film will also address the wider events surrounding that championship fight, including Ayrton Senna’s fatal accident, accusations of manipulation and claims involving unfair driving manoeuvres. Against that backdrop, Schumacher’s rise created what Netflix describes as a genuine ‘Schumi Mania’.
The documentary’s central portrait is deliberately broader than the uncompromising competitor seen on track. Corinna Schumacher and others close to him recall a driver defined by his fighting spirit in competition, while also describing a sensitive and empathetic personality away from the circuit.
Interest among fans is already building.
