In a race defined by high-stakes drama and historic milestones, Nikola Tsolov emerged as the star of the show at the Melbourne Feature Race, securing his first-ever FIA Formula 2 victory. The Campos Racing driver didn't just win a race; he made history as the first Bulgarian driver to stand on the top step of the podium in the championship's history.
The race began with immediate intensity. Rodin Motorsport teammates Martinius Stenshorne and Alexander Dunne started on the front row and were locked in a fierce battle for the lead from the opening lights. However, the intra-team rivalry ended in disaster on Lap 3 when contact between the two sent both into retirement. Tsolov, who had made a brilliant start to climb into third, inherited the lead and never looked back.
Despite the pressure of multiple Safety Car restarts and the looming threat of Invicta Racing's Rafael Câmara, Tsolov displayed veteran-like composure. He managed his tires and the gap perfectly, rebuilding a buffer every time his rivals closed in. While the pit stop window and varying strategy calls shuffled the pack, Tsolov remained the constant at the front.
The closing stages were equally chaotic. A late Virtual Safety Car, triggered by Dino Beganovic's retirement, bunched the field up for a final sprint. Tsolov executed a flawless restart, leaving Câmara and Trident's Laurens van Hoepen to battle for the remaining podium spots. Behind them, late-race charges from Ritomo Miyata and Oliver Goethe provided plenty of entertainment, but no one could touch the "Bulgarian Lion."
With this dominant performance, Tsolov leaves Melbourne at the top of the Drivers' Championship standings with 25 points. For Tsolov and Campos Racing, this victory was more than just a successful weekend---it was a statement of intent for the 2026 season. If this race is any indication, the battle for the title is going to be spectacular.
