
Formula 1 returns from the summer break with a new challenge at Zandvoort, as the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix becomes a Sprint weekend for the first time.
The 4.259-kilometre circuit on the North Sea coast features 14 corners and remains one of the most distinctive tracks on the calendar. Its defining features are the heavily banked Turns 3 and 14, with gradients of approximately 19 and 18 degrees respectively, generating particularly high vertical and lateral loads on the tyres.

For the Dutch Grand Prix, the three available compounds will be the C2 Hard, C3 Medium and C4 Soft, unchanged from the selection used in 2025.
Zandvoort places considerable stress on the tyres despite its relatively short lap. Drivers spend much of the lap cornering, including through several high-speed sections, resulting in high energy density and significant loads across each stint.


Grip can also change rapidly throughout the weekend. Sections of the circuit have been resurfaced over the years, while sand blown in from the nearby beaches can settle on the racing surface and reduce grip from one session to another.
Teams will therefore need to find a careful compromise between tyre management and car setup. The aerodynamic configuration is expected to require high downforce levels, comparable to those used at the Hungaroring.
The Dutch Grand Prix takes place one week earlier than in 2025, putting greater theoretical emphasis on thermal degradation.
However, Zandvoort's coastal location makes conditions difficult to predict. Temperatures often remain relatively low even during August, while rain and strong winds are common.
Wind could become particularly significant under the new 2026 aerodynamic regulations, with sudden gusts potentially affecting car behaviour through the circuit's fast and exposed sections.
The introduction of the Sprint format significantly reduces preparation time.
Teams will have just one Free Practice session to understand tyre behaviour, optimise setup and prepare for the competitive sessions that follow.
The Hard compound is expected to be an important reference for Sunday's Grand Prix, while both the Medium and Soft could become viable options during Saturday's Sprint.
Track position will remain crucial. Zandvoort's narrow layout, limited straight-line sections and generally difficult overtaking conditions mean that qualifying performance and strategic timing could have an even greater influence than usual.

All three available compounds were represented on the starting grid last season.
Fourteen drivers started on the Medium, four chose the Soft and two selected the Hard. The C2 Hard became the most widely used tyre during the race, particularly for the longer middle stint.
Late Safety Car periods then influenced the closing stages, allowing most drivers to make an additional stop after lap 50. Many completed the Grand Prix on the Soft compound.
Zandvoort has hosted every edition of the Dutch Grand Prix, with the event first appearing on the Formula 1 calendar in 1952.
The 2026 race will be the 36th Dutch Grand Prix.
Jim Clark remains the most successful driver at the circuit with four victories, while Ferrari leads the constructors' standings with eight wins.
