Rosberg warns Antonelli could face title panic if rivals close the gap
Former Formula 1 world champion Nico Rosberg has issued a candid warning regarding Kimi Antonelliâs title bid, suggesting the Mercedes driver could become increasingly panicked if emerging threats from McLaren and Ferrari pull him back toward the chasing pack.
Antonelli currently commands an 81-point lead in the standings over his second-placed team-mate George Russell. That advantage grew further following a triumph at the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at the Madring circuit, where Antonelli successfully converted a well-timed virtual safety car period into victory. Despite the win, the Italian admitted post-race that it was not his preferred manner of winning, acknowledging that McLarenâs Lando Norris would likely have secured the top step without the disruption. His flat-out approach in Spain even led Toto Wolff to admit Kimi Antonelli is giving Mercedes grey hairs along the way.
Parallels with Rosbergâs 2016 Championship Run
Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 Show, 2016 title winner Rosberg highlighted how quickly psychological pressure can escalate when performance margins narrow at the business end of a championship campaign.
âThe worst-case scenario is if suddenly McLaren starts to edge away and maybe there's also a Ferrari improvement or something, and that Kimi starts to drop back into the pack a little bit more,â Rosberg explained.
Rosberg drew direct comparisons to the closing stages of his own successful 2016 title run, reflecting on how easily the competitive landscape can deteriorate when pace falters.
âThat is similar to where I was in my championship year because I started to, because I was not driving as well. I started to drop back into the pack in those last four races,â Rosberg said. âI was always at some point, even in Mexico, in qualifying until the last moment. I was actually only sixth in the rankings in Q3 until the last moment. In each of those races, I was P3 at some point, and not P2 and [Max] Verstappen was banging into me like every single race.â
Managing the Rising Stakes
Rosberg cautioned that any sudden dip into the midfield pack exposes a championship leader to heightened operational and on-track risks.
âSo if he were to drop back into the pack ever so slightly again, the risk just comes up, and you start to get more and more panicked about things,â Rosberg concluded.
The 2026 season continues with Round 15 at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, scheduled for 24-26 September.
