Stella calls Norris-Piastri Singapore Sprint clash "very serious"

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has described the final-lap collision between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri in the Singapore Grand Prix Sprint as a serious setback, citing the damage to the team and the points lost in a tight championship fight.
Piastri retired after contact with Norris. The stewards found that neither driver was wholly or predominantly to blame, but Stella said his focus was not on assigning individual fault. He wants the pair to consider how they can race together while protecting the team’s interests.

The collision put McLaren’s championship aims under pressure
The incident cost McLaren eight points. After the Sprint, the team was only nine points ahead of Red Bull in the battle for third in the Teams’ Championship, while also hoping to challenge Ferrari for second.

Stella said the collision was unacceptable because it caused material damage and undermined those objectives. He acknowledged that incidents involving drivers can be unpredictable, but said McLaren needed to examine how to prevent a repeat.
The team principal rejected the idea that looking for lessons made the incident any less damaging. For him, reviewing mistakes is part of the work of improving, not a reason to soften his judgement. He said the team had to address what he saw as a significant flaw when its two cars made contact.

The clash also comes as McLaren pursues its wider 2026 targets, which F1LivePulse has covered in its report on Stella’s assessment of the team’s race-winning potential.
Stella wants collaboration, not a search for blame
Stella said conversations had already begun after the Sprint, with further discussions planned before the Grand Prix and after the weekend. He expects Norris and Piastri to reflect on what happened, but said he was not looking for apologies or a verdict on which driver was at fault.
Instead, he wants the drivers to work out how their cooperation can best serve McLaren and ensure a similar incident does not happen again. The pair were set to start the Grand Prix from the third row.

Stella’s comments place the emphasis on the working relationship between the two drivers as the team moves forward. F1LivePulse has previously reported on his view of Norris and Piastri’s relationship, a partnership now facing fresh scrutiny after the Singapore contact.
