Esteban Ocon is facing mounting pressure to retain his Formula 1 seat beyond the 2026 season, with reports emerging of a significant rift between the Frenchman and Haas Team Principal Ayao Komatsu. The tension reportedly reached a boiling point during the Miami Grand Prix, casting serious doubt on Ocon's future with the American outfit, as many fans believe this could be his final seat in the sport.
Ocon's current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, and his recent performances have done little to solidify his position. After being outperformed by rookie teammate Oliver Bearman in 2025—a year where Haas finished 15th in the Constructors' Championship with 38 points—the struggles have continued into 2026. After four races, Ocon sits 16th in the standings with just a single point, while Bearman has already amassed 17.

Speaking on the Paddock Access podcast, motorsport journalist Jacky Martens shed light on the deteriorating relationship within the team.

"I heard they had a fallout again this weekend, Esteban Ocon and also with the team principal, with Komatsu," Martens revealed. "I don’t know. There’s something… Esteban Ocon, he had a lot of problems. There was a reason that they kicked him out at Alpine. But he’s an amazing driver. He’s one of the only few who can say that he actually beat Max Verstappen back in Formula 3. He’s lightning quick, but for some reason, it doesn’t work out for him at the moment."

With Ocon's position looking increasingly precarious, speculation is mounting that Yuki Tsunoda could be drafted in as his replacement. Following his departure from Red Bull at the conclusion of the 2025 season, Tsunoda has transitioned into a reserve driver role for the Milton Keynes squad. However, his ambition remains firmly fixed on a full-time return to the grid, and his time as a full-time driver with Red Bull might be spent.
A return to Racing Bulls appears highly unlikely, meaning the Japanese driver will need to look outside the operation to secure a race seat. While Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko previously snuffed out interest from Haas to sign Tsunoda for the 2026 campaign, the American outfit could become a viable option for 2027 if Ocon fails to improve.
Martens addressed the growing paddock chatter surrounding Tsunoda's potential move: "There’s so many rumours at the moment in the paddock about potentially… then there’s already the link between Toyota, Yuki Tsunoda, Japanese driver. Maybe he will replace him. I think Honda is happy to let him go when he can have a seat in Formula 1. It’s the pinnacle of the sport in the end. But there’s an interesting situation there."
Tsunoda brings a wealth of experience, having started 109 Grands Prix. While he is yet to score a podium, he has accumulated 124 career points, with a best race finish of fourth and a peak qualifying position of third. His highest championship finish to date is 12th.

Haas is not the only potential avenue for Tsunoda's Formula 1 comeback. The driver market remains fluid, and several scenarios could play out in his favor.
Should Lewis Hamilton's future in F1 remain unclear and he decides to retire beyond 2026, it could trigger a chain reaction. Such a move would likely see Bearman promoted to Ferrari, creating a vacancy at Haas that Tsunoda could fill.
Alternatively, Tsunoda could emerge as a candidate for Alpine, potentially replacing Franco Colapinto. With the French squad showing signs of being on the up under the new regulations and benefiting from Mercedes engines, a move to the team could represent his best way back onto the F1 grid.
