The 10 Most Shocking Formula 1 Driver Transfers in History

The Formula 1 driver market is waiting for two major decisions. Fernando Alonso and Max Verstappen are expected to play a central role in determining how the 2027 grid takes shape, with both world champions viewed as potential first dominoes in a wider chain of transfers.

That would not be without precedent. Formula 1 has repeatedly seen established stars abandon familiar surroundings, leave front-running teams or commit themselves to projects that appeared far less certain. Some moves delivered championships and transformed teams. Others became costly detours. All of them changed the sport’s landscape.

2025: Lewis Hamilton to Ferrari

Lewis Hamilton’s move from Mercedes to Ferrari was one of the most unexpected announcements of the modern era. Hamilton had been Mercedes’ golden boy, racing with Mercedes power since entering Formula 1 and joining the works team in 2013. With Mercedes, he established himself as the most successful driver in F1 history after winning six world championships with the Silver Arrows.

The relationship, however, entered a different phase during the ground-effect era that began in 2022. Mercedes’ performance dropped sharply after a controversial aerodynamic concept failed to keep the team at the front. Hamilton endured his first winless F1 season in 2022, while a short contract extension and his long-standing ambition to race for Ferrari created the conditions for a remarkable change.

Days before Mercedes unveiled its 2024 car, Hamilton announced that he would join Ferrari for 2025. The timing and scale of the decision caught paddock insiders, experts and fans off guard. Many expected Hamilton to complete his career with Mercedes. Instead, he chose to fulfil a lifelong ambition of racing in red — and has since returned to the top step of the podium.

2019: Daniel Ricciardo to Renault

Daniel Ricciardo appeared to be Red Bull’s next great star after Sebastian Vettel left the team following four world championships. The Australian justified that expectation with seven race victories and a highest championship finish of third.

His position became less secure after Max Verstappen arrived in 2016. Ricciardo was outscored by Verstappen in 2018, and rumours of favouritism towards the Dutchman were already circulating. Against that backdrop, Ricciardo began examining opportunities away from Milton Keynes.

The resulting decision was a major gamble. A works-team opportunity, a fresh environment and a significantly improved financial package combined to take Ricciardo to Renault for 2019. The shock came from the competitive gap between the two organisations. Red Bull was a top-three team that regularly fought Ferrari and the dominant Mercedes for wins. Renault, by contrast, was firmly in the midfield and still rebuilding.

Ricciardo’s choice demonstrated that a driver’s priorities are not always defined by immediate results. The appeal of a new project and the chance to become its central figure can outweigh the security of remaining with a proven front-running operation.

2013: Lewis Hamilton to Mercedes

Before Hamilton’s Ferrari switch, he had already made another career-defining move by leaving McLaren, the team that had supported him throughout his route to Formula 1.

Hamilton came through the feeder series with McLaren’s backing and made his F1 debut with the team in 2007. His start was exceptional: he won four races in his debut season and finished second in the championship before winning the title the following year.

After four less successful seasons, Hamilton decided that he needed a new beginning. His destination was Mercedes, but this was not yet the powerhouse associated with his later career. Mercedes had won only one race since returning to Formula 1 in 2010, making the decision look highly uncertain at the time.

Hamilton was instead placing his faith in the coming 2014 rule change. The partnership would ultimately help him become one of the most successful drivers in championship history. The move remains a classic example of a driver choosing potential over established performance — and being rewarded for judging the future correctly.

1999: Jacques Villeneuve to BAR

Jacques Villeneuve was at the height of his influence after winning the 1997 drivers’ championship in only his second Formula 1 season. Williams had provided the platform for his maiden F1 victory and title, but a decline in the team’s form and a resurgent McLaren challenge left Villeneuve looking elsewhere.

He was reportedly offered a drive at McLaren for 1999. Instead, he selected a project with almost no established competitive foundation: British American Racing. The team had been formed from the ashes of Tyrrell and was led by Craig Pollock, who was also Villeneuve’s manager.

Villeneuve hoped to build the team around himself and pursue greater success in Formula 1. The immediate reality was considerably harsher. He retired from 12 of the 16 races in his first season and recorded a best finish of eighth in Italy. The following year brought only limited improvement, with a handful of top-five results.

Villeneuve later re-signed with the team for 2002, but subsequently acknowledged the decision as one of his few regrets in F1. It was a transfer built on ambition, influence and the promise of creating something new, but the results showed how difficult it is for even a world champion to lift a struggling project alone.

1997: Damon Hill to Arrows

Damon Hill’s move to Arrows was another extraordinary transition from the Williams title-winning environment to the back of the grid. The Briton joined Arrows for 1997 immediately after winning the 1996 championship, although the circumstances behind the transfer were complicated.

Hill had started 1996 brilliantly, winning four of the first five grands prix and building on championship runner-up finishes in 1994 and 1995. Yet it was rumoured that Williams had never truly wanted him as its team leader. Remarks about performance and pay were said to have created tension, and the team seized on several early-season errors.

Williams chose not to renew Hill’s contract. He then won the championship but found that few competitive options remained by the end of the season. The result was a one-year deal with Arrows.

The transfer was shocking because it separated a newly crowned world champion from the team with which he had achieved his greatest success. It also showed the brutal timing of the driver market: a title does not always guarantee a strong seat if the relationship with a team has already broken down.

1996: Michael Schumacher to Ferrari

Michael Schumacher’s move from Benetton to Ferrari began one of the most successful partnerships in Formula 1 history, but it was not considered an obvious choice at the time.

Ferrari had finished no higher than third in the previous five years and was in the middle of a rebuilding process. Renault’s impending exit from F1 meant Benetton was about to lose its engine supplier, while Ferrari had brought in new technical leaders under Jean Todt and wanted a star around whom it could build.

Schumacher was in an exceptionally strong position in 1995. He had won his first championship and was on course for a second in only his fourth season. Todt regarded him as the missing piece of Ferrari’s rebuilding plan and reportedly spent a day in Monaco persuading the German to sign.

Schumacher accepted the challenge. He won his first race in Ferrari red at the 1996 Spanish Grand Prix and went on to claim 71 more victories and five world championships with the team. The transfer was seismic precisely because it was not simply a move to a ready-made winner. Schumacher joined a team that still had to become one.

1991: Nigel Mansell to Williams

Nigel Mansell’s Ferrari spell began with a victory on debut, but it quickly became difficult. Reliability problems, on-track errors and a race ban disrupted his first season. Although he returned to the top step of the podium in his second year, he scored fewer points in 1990 and endured repeated tension away from the circuit.

Disputes with team-mate Alain Prost and accusations that the pair did not have equal machinery contributed to Mansell announcing his retirement after the British Grand Prix. Those plans changed when Frank Williams made an extraordinary effort to bring him back for 1991.

Mansell received undisputed number-one status, written guarantees of support from Williams and its suppliers, and a salary of £4.6 million per season. The arrangement gave the driver the authority and backing he had wanted, while Williams gained a proven race winner.

The investment worked. Mansell finished second in the 1991 championship before winning the title for Williams a year later. His move was not merely a transfer from Ferrari to Williams; it was a carefully constructed return that restored his position at the front of the sport.

1990: Alain Prost to Ferrari

Alain Prost had become synonymous with McLaren after joining the team in 1984 following the start of his career with Renault. At McLaren, he finished second before winning consecutive championships in 1985 and 1986, then added a third title in 1989.

His final two years with the team were dominated by conflict with Ayrton Senna. The rivalry produced accusations of unsportsmanlike conduct, claims of dangerous driving and a breakdown in communication after the Imola race. The relationship had become impossible to ignore.

Midway through the season, Prost announced that he would leave McLaren for Ferrari in 1990. He even handed his trophy from the Italian Grand Prix to the waiting fans. The announcement provoked outrage, with some calling for McLaren to dismiss him so that he could finish the season in Ferrari colours.

That did not happen. Prost remained with McLaren for the rest of the campaign and secured the championship after colliding with Senna in the penultimate race. His Ferrari move was one of the sport’s most politically charged transfers, combining elite-level performance with a rivalry that had pushed a partnership beyond repair.

1976: Emerson Fittipaldi to Fittipaldi

Emerson Fittipaldi’s decision was unusual even by Formula 1 standards. After competing for McLaren, he walked away from the team to race for the family outfit created by his brother Wilson Fittipaldi — the only Brazil-based F1 team.

The timing made the move particularly startling. Emerson had won the 1974 championship with McLaren and finished second to Niki Lauda in 1975. He was leaving a proven team at the peak of his career to pursue victory with a Brazilian project that shared his family name.

The results were difficult. Fittipaldi spent five seasons with the struggling outfit, achieving a best finish of second in a chaotic 1978 Brazilian Grand Prix and only one additional F1 podium.

It remains one of the clearest examples of a driver choosing identity and ambition over competitive security. The move did not produce the success Fittipaldi wanted, but its significance lies in the scale of the personal commitment behind it.

1954: Juan Manuel Fangio to Mercedes

Juan Manuel Fangio’s transfer to Mercedes was not only shocking; it was a pioneering mid-season switch. While leading the 1954 championship, Fangio moved from Maserati to Mercedes after just two races.

He had won in Argentina and Belgium at the start of the season before joining Mercedes as the German manufacturer entered Formula 1. The decision immediately paid off. Fangio won four of the six races he entered with Mercedes that year, secured the championship and followed it with a second title in 1955.

The move stands apart from the others because of its timing. Fangio did not wait for the season to end or for a conventional contract cycle. He changed teams while already dominating the standings and then used Mercedes’ competitive strength to complete a successful championship campaign.

What these transfers reveal about F1’s biggest decisions

Taken together, these 10 moves show that a shocking transfer is not always a mistake, and it is not always a sign of instability. Hamilton’s move to Mercedes, Schumacher’s decision to join Ferrari and Mansell’s return to Williams all demonstrate how a bold change can reshape a driver’s legacy.

Others reveal the risks. Ricciardo left a top-three Red Bull team for a Renault operation still rebuilding. Villeneuve exchanged Williams for BAR and struggled with reliability and results. Hill moved from the title-winning Williams environment to Arrows after circumstances left him with few alternatives. Fittipaldi’s family-team venture produced limited success despite its personal importance.

The common thread is that every move changed the balance of expectations. A driver can seek a new challenge, respond to internal tension, pursue a works-team opportunity, trust a future rule change or commit to a personal project. The outcome depends not only on talent, but also on timing, team trajectory and the strength of the relationship between driver and organisation.

That is why the decisions facing Alonso and Verstappen carry such weight. Neither is guaranteed to leave, but either departure would set the driver market in motion. Formula 1 has seen this kind of disruption before. Its history suggests that the biggest transfer stories are rarely just about changing garages; they are about choosing which future to believe in.
