
Formula 1 arrives at Monza with Pirelli's three softest compounds available, but that does not necessarily mean the Italian Grand Prix is heading towards an aggressive multi-stop race.
The C3 will serve as the Hard, the C4 as the Medium and the C5 as the Soft, giving teams a relatively compact range of compounds for a circuit where tyre degradation has traditionally been less influential than track position and the enormous cost of an additional pit stop.

In normal conditions, all three compounds could have a role to play, particularly if temperatures remain moderate. But the fundamental strategic question is unlikely to be which tyre is fastest. It will be how far teams can extend a stint while keeping the rear axle under control.
At 5.793 kilometres and with only 11 corners, Monza remains one of Formula 1's purest tests of straight-line efficiency.
That characteristic becomes even more significant under the new regulations. As explained in our 2026 Formula 1 regulations guide, the current power units place far greater emphasis on electrical deployment and harvesting, while active aerodynamics reduce drag through designated sections of the lap.
The updated 2026 Monza track map features two major Straight Mode zones, making the Temple of Speed one of the clearest examples of how the new aerodynamic and power unit philosophies interact.

Team simulations suggest lap times could be around two seconds faster than in 2025, but outright performance will depend heavily on how efficiently drivers use their available electrical energy across Monza's long acceleration phases.
That adds a new dimension to a circuit already defined by low drag.
As we have seen elsewhere this season, excessive electrical deployment can leave drivers exposed later on the straight as the battery contribution falls away, a phenomenon explored in our analysis of super clipping in Formula 1.
At Monza, managing that balance could be just as important as aerodynamic efficiency.

Pirelli expects the characteristics of the 2026 cars to alter the distribution of tyre stress compared with previous seasons.
The front axle should experience relatively lower braking loads, while the rear tyres will be asked to absorb significant energy as drivers deploy the power unit under acceleration.
That makes traction one of the central performance variables of the weekend.
The exits of the First Chicane and Ascari are particularly important. Both feed into long acceleration zones, meaning even a small amount of wheelspin can hurt tyre temperatures while simultaneously costing speed over a substantial section of track.

This is where teams will need to find the right compromise.
Monza demands extremely low-downforce aerodynamic configurations to maximise terminal speed, but stripping too much load from the car can compromise braking confidence and rear stability. A car that is exceptionally quick through the speed traps but difficult to control under braking or on corner exit may ultimately lose more time than it gains.
Ferrari's approach illustrates how specific that challenge has become. The team's Monza development programme has focused not simply on trimming wing levels, but on reducing drag through the wider aerodynamic package.

The resurfacing completed in 2024 remains an important part of Monza's tyre behaviour.
The relatively smooth asphalt generally provides good grip from the early stages of the weekend and does not subject the tyres to the sustained lateral loading seen at circuits such as Silverstone, Suzuka or Zandvoort.
No major surface changes have been made ahead of the 2026 event.
However, kerbs at Turns 1, 4 and 8 have been rebuilt, while the gravel run-off at Turn 5 has been replaced by asphalt.
The principal concern during the race should therefore be thermal rather than mechanical degradation.
Repeated traction events can gradually raise rear tyre temperatures, particularly when cars are running closely together or when ambient conditions are hot. Once the rear tyres move beyond their optimal temperature window, drivers can begin to lose traction, generating further wheelspin and creating a self-reinforcing overheating cycle.
Managing that process could determine how long teams are able to extend their first stint.

Despite Pirelli bringing the softest combination in its range, a one-stop race remains the most probable outcome.
Monza's strategic equation strongly discourages unnecessary visits to the pits. The pit-lane time loss is substantial, while overtaking opportunities mean teams are less dependent on aggressive undercuts to recover track position.
That creates a powerful incentive to keep a car circulating even when the tyres are beginning to decline.
The Medium-Hard combination should therefore emerge as the baseline strategy, although the relatively soft C3 Hard compound means teams cannot treat the second stint simply as an exercise in tyre preservation.
The C5 Soft presents the more interesting variable.

If temperatures are relatively low, its additional grip could make it viable for an aggressive opening stint or a late-race attack. In hotter conditions, however, rear thermal degradation could make a heavily fuelled first stint on the Soft difficult to justify.
Its most natural role may therefore come towards the end of the Grand Prix, when fuel loads are lower and drivers can exploit its performance over a short final run.
Last year's Italian Grand Prix provides a useful reference.
The Medium was comfortably the preferred starting tyre, with the majority of the field choosing the yellow-banded compound. Five drivers started on the Hard, while only one attempted the opening stint on the Soft.
The Soft became more relevant late in the race.

Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who finished second and third respectively, switched from the Medium to the Soft for their final stint. Race winner Max Verstappen instead completed the Grand Prix with the conventional Medium-Hard combination.
That pattern illustrates the fundamental Monza strategy problem.
The Soft can provide significant performance when fuel loads fall, but there is rarely sufficient incentive to build an entire race strategy around it. Avoiding an additional pit stop normally carries greater strategic value than extracting every fraction of lap time from the tyre allocation.
The same logic should remain relevant in 2026.

Monza's tyre demands may appear straightforward compared with more abrasive or high-energy circuits, but the 2026 cars introduce a different layer of complexity.
Tyre management, electrical deployment and aerodynamic efficiency are now closely connected.
Drivers need enough rear grip to deploy power cleanly out of the slow chicanes, enough stability to attack the braking zones and enough energy available to avoid becoming vulnerable on the longest straights.
For Pirelli, the C3-C4-C5 nomination provides enough variation to open alternative strategies without artificially forcing additional stops.
For the teams, the objective will be considerably simpler: complete the race with one stop while keeping the rear tyres alive for as long as possible.
If temperatures cooperate, the Medium and Hard should make that relatively straightforward. If the rear axle begins to overheat, however, the strategic picture could change quickly.
And at Monza, where track position, slipstreaming and the new Overtake Mode can all reshape a race within a few hundred metres, even a small difference in tyre condition could become decisive.

The 2026 Italian Grand Prix will be the 77th edition of one of Formula 1's oldest events.
Monza has hosted the race on every occasion except 1980, when the Italian Grand Prix moved to Imola while renovation work was carried out at the circuit.
Michael Schumacher and Lewis Hamilton share the record for the most Italian Grand Prix victories, with five each, while Ferrari remains the event's most successful constructor with 20 wins.
Hamilton also holds Monza's records for pole positions and fastest laps, with seven of each.
Among the current Formula 1 grid, Pierre Gasly's connection with the circuit remains particularly significant. The Frenchman claimed his maiden Grand Prix victory here in 2020, winning for AlphaTauri and delivering the Faenza-based team its first victory under that identity.
