Coulthard rules out a future Formula 1 return to Zandvoort

Zandvoort’s Formula 1 farewell
David Coulthard believes Formula 1 has likely reached the end of its relationship with Zandvoort, with the circuit preparing to host its final scheduled Dutch Grand Prix this weekend.
The coastal venue returned to the calendar in 2021 after a 35-year absence, benefiting from the surge in interest generated by Max Verstappen’s success. However, its privately funded promoter chose not to sign a contract extension beyond 2026, leaving the upcoming event as the circuit’s final scheduled appearance.

Coulthard’s assessment is unequivocal: Zandvoort is unlikely to reappear once its current deal ends. His comments add to the sense that this weekend is not simply another race, but a closing chapter for one of Formula 1’s most distinctive venues. Verstappen has already described the finale as a “shame” — a view explored in our report on his reaction to Zandvoort’s departure.
Physical limits meet commercial pressure
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast, Coulthard pointed to a combination of geographical and commercial factors. He said the Dutch prince and his partner were instrumental in bringing the race back to the Netherlands, but argued that the venue is constrained by its surroundings.

“They’re surrounded by a natural park, the sand dunes; they can’t expand, they can’t grow,” Coulthard explained. At the same time, he said Formula 1 is continuing to seek increased revenue from its commercial rights.
That combination, in his view, has made the event difficult to sustain in its current form. With Rwanda and other potential hosts seeking to join Formula 1 and offering the prospect of state-of-the-art facilities, Zandvoort faces a clear disadvantage in the calendar’s commercial race.
A circuit Coulthard still values
Coulthard was careful to distinguish the venue’s commercial limitations from its sporting qualities. He called Zandvoort a “brilliant little racetrack” and recalled that his first international victory as a young Formula 3 driver came there.
He also praised the circuit’s Paddock Club, particularly its view of the first corner. Nevertheless, his conclusion was firm: “The journey has come to its end, and I don’t believe we’ll ever go back there with Formula 1.” For Coulthard, the final Dutch Grand Prix should therefore be remembered as the end of a successful, but ultimately finite, return.
