F1 ACADEMY at Zandvoort preview: Palmowski and Felbermayr renew title fight

The summer break may be over, but the seaside setting of Zandvoort remains firmly at the centre of the F1 ACADEMY conversation. Round 4 of the 2026 season arrives with every millisecond and every point carrying greater weight as the championship battle begins to take a more defined shape.

For fans planning to follow every session, the F1 ACADEMY at Zandvoort schedule and viewing guide provides the essential weekend details. On track, the questions are more demanding. Can Alisha Palmowski extend her advantage? Will Emma Felbermayr stop the momentum? Can Nina Gademan turn home support into a title challenge? And will Alba Larsen finally produce the breakthrough her season promised?

Dankjewel, Zandvoort

“Dankjewel” means thank you, and Zandvoort has given F1 ACADEMY plenty to be thankful for. The circuit has repeatedly played an important role in the title picture, producing moments that have shifted momentum and strengthened the championship narratives around its leading drivers.

In 2024, Abbi Pulling moved closer to glory at the venue. Her win and podium finish extended her advantage over Doriane Pin to 71 points, making Zandvoort a significant landmark in that title race.

Last season, Maya Weug responded to disappointment in Montreal by reviving her own championship campaign on home turf. A double podium, including victory in Race 2, represented a decisive rebound and underlined how quickly the competitive picture can change at this circuit.

The 2026 edition will be the final chapter of Zandvoort’s F1 ACADEMY run on the Dutch Grand Prix calendar. That farewell will add emotion around the event, but the drivers will have little room for sentiment once qualifying begins. The circuit’s demands, the weather threat and the championship standings all point towards a weekend in which execution will matter as much as outright pace.

Palmowski versus Felbermayr: the championship fight reignites

The central storyline is the renewed confrontation between Alisha Palmowski and Emma Felbermayr. The pair have firmly established themselves as the leading protagonists of the 2026 title battle, and Zandvoort offers both an opportunity and a test of their respective momentum.

Palmowski arrives as the standings leader after taking her third victory of the season at Silverstone. She is also the only full-time driver on the grid to have secured pole position this year, a statistic that becomes particularly significant at a circuit where starting position has historically carried enormous value.

Her advantage over Felbermayr stands at 30 points. That is a substantial buffer, but it is not a margin that allows the Red Bull Racing driver to relax. With the season progressing, the value of every qualifying position and every race finish continues to rise. Palmowski’s lead gives her protection, yet the pressure remains on her to keep converting strong pace into points.

The wider picture is even more encouraging for Palmowski’s Campos Racing squad. Campos leads the Teams’ Standings by 53 points, the largest advantage recorded at the halfway point of the series. The team’s form has also been reinforced by its preparation for this weekend: in the 2026 in-season test, Campos recorded eight top-10 times across its trio of drivers.

That evidence suggests the team has arrived in a strong position. However, Zandvoort has not always been Campos’ most productive venue on race day. Across three seasons, the team has achieved only three podiums at the circuit. That record gives Felbermayr a clear source of encouragement, even as she attempts to reverse the championship’s direction.

Felbermayr needs to stop the points gap growing

Felbermayr’s title hopes increasingly depend on maintaining her points-scoring consistency and, more importantly, outscoring Palmowski across both races. The trend has moved against the Audi driver throughout the season.

After Shanghai, Felbermayr held a six-point advantage. That became a 25-point deficit after Montreal, before the gap increased by another five points following Silverstone. The numbers describe a championship that has gradually shifted towards Palmowski, rather than one decided by a single dramatic reversal.

That makes Zandvoort strategically important for Felbermayr. She does not necessarily need a spectacular result in isolation, but she does need to interrupt Palmowski’s accumulation of points. The challenge is compounded by the fact that the two drivers have already shared the podium three times this season, illustrating how closely their campaigns have been linked.

A strong weekend for Felbermayr would therefore do more than reduce the points deficit. It would change the immediate rhythm of the championship and put pressure back on the leader before the final two rounds. A result that leaves Palmowski extending her advantage, by contrast, would make the task increasingly difficult.

Rain could reshape the weekend

Zandvoort is demanding in dry conditions, combining high-speed corners, undulations and banking that can be difficult to master. This weekend, the circuit’s physical challenge may be accompanied by a changing track surface, with downpours looming in the forecasts.

The latest Zandvoort weather forecast adds another layer to the weekend build-up, but the competitive implications are already clear from what happened in Montreal. Wet conditions there favoured Palmowski, Felbermayr and Nina Gademan. Palmowski held her position, while Felbermayr and Gademan each gained two places. Ella Lloyd was even more effective in the conditions, climbing from P16 to P9.

The important distinction was that the rain fell before the session rather than during the race. The track was slippery, but it improved progressively as the laps passed. That created a moving target for the drivers, forcing them to judge how much grip was available and when the circuit would reward greater commitment.

There have been no in-race showers so far this season. The last such occasion was Race 1 in Las Vegas, meaning the rookies face another difficult learning curve if Zandvoort produces genuinely wet racing. The challenge is not simply to find speed; it is to understand how quickly the available grip is changing while protecting the opportunity to score points.

For the experienced contenders, variable conditions could offer a chance to exploit knowledge and composure. For the less experienced drivers, they represent another uphill battle. Either way, the weather could prevent the weekend from becoming a straightforward contest of qualifying order and dry-weather pace.

Qualifying and clean air may decide the outcome

The statistics at Zandvoort are emphatic: six of the circuit’s seven races have been won by the driver starting from pole. That makes qualifying one of the defining sessions of the weekend.

For Palmowski, another pole would strengthen the area in which she already holds a clear distinction over the full-time field. For Felbermayr, qualifying well could be the most direct way to apply pressure before the races begin. At a circuit where track position is so valuable, the first battle may be decided before the lights go out.

Pole is not the only route to victory, however. Overtaking remains possible, even if it is not straightforward. Drivers will need to combine courage with precision, particularly in the circuit’s major braking and high-banking zones.

Turn 1, known as Tarzan, is the prime overtaking opportunity. Its wide bend also contains the heaviest braking zone on the track, creating the clearest chance for a driver to attack. The entry demands commitment, but the space available gives the field a realistic opportunity to gain positions.

Turn 3, Hugenholz, is another important area. Its 18-degree banking creates two possible racing lines, allowing cars to exit the corner alongside one another. That can set up a drag race along the short straight, turning a side-by-side moment into a decisive position change.

Even so, the basic lesson from the circuit’s record remains unchanged: clean air and a strong starting position are likely to be valuable assets. Drivers who qualify at the front can control more of the race’s rhythm, while those starting further back may have to accept greater risk to recover ground.

Gademan returns to the scene of her breakthrough

Nina Gademan’s home connection gives the Dutch driver one of the weekend’s most compelling personal storylines. Zandvoort has already delivered several important moments in her career, and she returns with the opportunity to build on them.

Her 2024 debut at the circuit made her the first Wild Card driver to score points. Her fourth-place finish in Race 1 was, at that time, the best result achieved by a Wild Card driver. The achievement established an immediate connection between Gademan and the track.

Last season, that connection became even more significant. On her 22nd birthday, the Alpine driver claimed her maiden single-seater victory at Zandvoort. She converted reverse-grid pole into a win on her third attempt, producing the kind of breakthrough that can define a driver’s confidence and reputation.

Gademan now returns as one of the four winners in the 2026 season. She sits third in the Standings on 50 points, and closing the gap to Felbermayr is a realistic objective. If she can turn her home advantage into another strong haul, she could move herself into the title conversation with two rounds still to come.

The route is demanding, but her record at Zandvoort provides a strong foundation. This is not simply a home event for Gademan; it is the circuit where she first scored points as a Wild Card and later secured her maiden single-seater win. More silverware would strengthen her position at exactly the moment when the championship battle is beginning to narrow.

Can Larsen turn confidence into a breakthrough?

Alba Larsen arrives at Zandvoort with a very different objective. Expectations were high for the Ferrari driver’s second F1 ACADEMY campaign, with 30% of fans predicting that she would win the title. So far, however, that promise has not translated into the results required to remain in contention.

Larsen is ninth in the Standings and sits 84 points behind Palmowski. Podiums have also proved elusive. She initially finished third in Montreal’s Reverse Grid Race, only to receive a post-race penalty for contact with Felbermayr on the opening lap. The sanction dropped her to 11th.

There are nevertheless signs that a change in momentum may be possible. Before the in-season test, Larsen scored her first British F4 podium by finishing second in the reverse-grid Race 2 at the same track where she will compete this weekend.

That result provided a confidence boost, and the improvement appeared on the timesheets during testing. Larsen recorded two second-fastest times across the four sessions, suggesting that the underlying speed is beginning to emerge even if the season’s points total does not yet reflect it.

Zandvoort therefore represents a chance to convert promise into evidence. The title may be out of reach in practical terms, but a podium would still carry considerable importance for Larsen and for the expectations surrounding her campaign. The question is whether the confidence from her British F4 result can become the consistent F1 ACADEMY performance that has so far been missing.

A farewell round with championship consequences

Zandvoort’s final appearance on the Dutch Grand Prix calendar gives Round 4 an obvious emotional backdrop, but the competitive stakes are what will define the weekend. Palmowski has the points advantage, the season’s strongest qualifying statistic and a 53-point team lead behind her. Felbermayr must halt that momentum. Gademan wants to turn home memories into a genuine title challenge. Larsen is chasing the breakthrough that has so far remained just beyond reach.

Add the possibility of rain to a circuit where qualifying has historically been decisive, and the ingredients are in place for a pivotal round. Zandvoort may be preparing to say goodbye, but before the final chequered flag falls, it still has the power to reshape the 2026 F1 ACADEMY championship.
