Formula 1 returns at Zandvoort: the key storylines as the 2026 season resumes

After three long weekends without a Formula 1 race, the championship is ready to restart. The summer shutdown has offered teams and drivers a necessary pause, but the second half of the 2026 season will leave little room to recover once the action resumes at Zandvoort.

The immediate focus, however, is on the final Formula 1 visit to Zandvoort. The circuit’s farewell will also be its first Sprint weekend, adding another layer of pressure after the break.

A demanding second half begins in the Netherlands

The first half of the season placed a heavy workload on every team. Six rounds were held across eight weeks before the mandatory two-week factory shutdowns in August. That pause was well earned, but the schedule ahead will be considerably more intense.

The Dutch Grand Prix begins a sequence in which competitive momentum could change quickly. After Zandvoort comes the double-header of Monza and Madrid, followed by three triple-headers that will determine the final shape of the championship. The compressed schedule will test the teams’ ability to develop, recover and execute consistently from one weekend to the next.

For Antonelli, the mathematics are clear: the lead is significant, but the number of remaining opportunities means the title fight is far from settled. Lewis Hamilton has fallen 50 points behind the Mercedes driver over the past two races, giving Ferrari an immediate reason to respond. The second half therefore starts with both a championship leader to protect and established challengers trying to regain ground.

A broader look at the major themes surrounding the run-in is available in our five key storylines for the second half of the 2026 F1 season, but Zandvoort provides the first meaningful test of whether the competitive order has shifted during the break.

Mercedes still leads, but the advantage is no longer absolute

Mercedes opened 2026 with six consecutive victories, establishing a clear early advantage. That dominance has since softened. The team won only two of the next five races, while Ferrari and McLaren each demonstrated that the gap at the front could be reduced.

Ferrari became the first team to defeat Mercedes over a Grand Prix distance, with Lewis Hamilton winning in Barcelona and Charles Leclerc taking victory at Silverstone. McLaren then followed in Budapest, where the defending Teams’ Champions secured their first win of the season.

The results point to a front-running battle that is no longer defined solely by Mercedes’ early-season strength. The question at Zandvoort is whether the challengers can turn individual victories into a sustained threat. That distinction will matter more as the calendar becomes denser and the points available begin to accumulate rapidly.

McLaren arrives with more than momentum

McLaren’s Budapest victory was important not only because it ended the team’s wait for a win in 2026, but also because it coincided with the introduction of the first part of an upgrade package. The programme is scheduled to be completed at Zandvoort.

That makes the Dutch Grand Prix a particularly revealing weekend for Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri. Even without another development, McLaren’s performance at a different circuit would have been worth monitoring after the Budapest result. The arrival of the next part of the package raises the stakes further.

The central issue is consistency. A single victory can confirm that a car has the required pace under specific conditions; repeated performances would show that McLaren can apply that speed across a wider range of circuits. Zandvoort will offer the first opportunity to assess whether the team can begin turning its late-first-half progress into a regular challenge to Mercedes.

McLaren’s wider half-season picture, including Norris’ breakthrough win and the team’s title-defence targets, is covered in our 2026 McLaren half-season report.

Ferrari needs to convert proximity into points

Ferrari has been Mercedes’ closest rival on average, but the team fell short of its expected performance level in Hungary. That result leaves the Scuderia with a dual objective for the second half: improve its ability to challenge at the front and ensure that its competitive level is reflected in the championship standings.

Hamilton’s 50-point deficit to Antonelli has developed over the last two races, so the response at Zandvoort will be important. Ferrari does not need only speed; it needs a sequence of results capable of changing the direction of the title fight.

The pressure is shared across the team. Hamilton is trying to reduce the gap to the championship leader, while Leclerc’s Silverstone victory underlines that Ferrari has already shown it can reach the top step. The challenge is to reproduce that level more consistently as the season enters its most demanding phase.

Aston Martin and Honda target another step

Aston Martin arrives at Zandvoort with a two-part development story. The first part was introduced ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix and immediately offered signs of progress. Fernando Alonso reached Q2 for the first time, while both Aston Martin cars competed in the midfield during the race.

That represented a successful first step in the team’s attempt to change the direction of its season. The second significant introduction is scheduled for this weekend, with Honda preparing an updated power unit.

Honda hopes the revised unit will provide incremental gains across a variety of areas and further improve Aston Martin’s competitiveness. The expectation is not necessarily an instant transformation. Given the nature of this year’s regulations, Aston Martin and Honda may need time to fully optimise the power unit’s potential.

That makes the weekend’s evaluation more nuanced than simply asking where the cars qualify. The team will also be looking for evidence that the chassis upgrade can deliver further performance when combined with the revised power unit. A second overall step forward would strengthen the impression that the Hungary package was the beginning of a recovery rather than an isolated improvement.

Cadillac enters a new leadership phase

The driver market remains relatively quiet as the paddock heads to the Netherlands, with little movement or contract confirmation reported from a driver perspective. One team has nevertheless made a significant change at the top of its organisation.

Cadillac announced last week that Graeme Lowdon had been replaced by Marcin Budkowski with immediate effect. CEO Dan Towriss said the decision was made with the next phase of Cadillac’s development in mind.

Lowdon was a pivotal figure in preparing Cadillac for its debut season in Formula 1. His work included hiring staff and helping build the organisation that joined the grid at the start of the year. Budkowski now takes over with experience across Ferrari, McLaren, Alpine and the FIA, among others.

The change is therefore about more than a new face on the pit wall. Cadillac is moving from the preparation of its debut towards the challenge of developing the team after entering the championship. Budkowski first visited the Cadillac factory at Silverstone on Monday and will be present in the Netherlands as he begins to settle into the role.

His immediate task will be to identify where improvements can be made in the short term, while also considering the team’s longer-term future. The Dutch Grand Prix will be an early opportunity to observe how the new leadership phase begins, even if meaningful organisational progress will take longer to measure.

Zandvoort prepares for its final Formula 1 weekend

Since returning to the calendar in 2021, the Dutch Grand Prix has become one of the most energetic events on the schedule. The race has traditionally drawn a huge crowd, with much of the support focused on home favourite Max Verstappen. The venue’s position among the sand dunes on the North Sea coast has helped create a distinctive atmosphere and a powerful launch point for the second half of the season.

That era now reaches its conclusion. After extending its hosting contract for one extra year, Zandvoort will stage its final Formula 1 race this weekend before dropping off the calendar.

The circuit itself is a demanding combination of high-speed corners, significant undulations and severe banking. Its character can be shaped further by the weather, with the past five years producing conditions that have ranged from high temperatures to strong winds and heavy downpours.

For the farewell edition, those variables will be joined by a new competitive format for the venue. Zandvoort will host a Sprint weekend for the first time, creating additional action on Friday and Saturday and leaving the drivers only one practice session in which to build up to speed.

A Sprint weekend with weather uncertainty

The Sprint format increases the importance of every early decision. Teams will have less time than usual to understand the circuit and establish a competitive direction before the weekend’s extra competitive sessions begin. At a track where high-speed corners, banking and undulations already demand precision, the reduced preparation time adds another challenge.

The current forecast suggests that rain could affect all three days of track running. If that prediction is realised, the final Dutch Grand Prix could become one of the most unpredictable weekends of the season. Wet conditions would place even greater emphasis on adaptation, while the Sprint format would provide more opportunities for incidents, reversals and points swings.

That combination gives Zandvoort a fittingly dramatic farewell. It is the final standalone race of 2026, the first Sprint weekend at the circuit and the opening contest of a relentlessly busy run to the championship finish. After the long pause, Formula 1 is not simply returning; it is entering the phase in which every upgrade, leadership decision and point can carry greater weight.
