Fernando Alonso commits to Aston Martin for 2027 as Lance Stroll stays
Fernando Alonso has confirmed he will remain with Aston Martin for the 2027 Formula 1 season, ending months of uncertainty over whether he would continue racing beyond his current contract. Lance Stroll has also agreed to stay, keeping the teamâs current driver line-up in place for its next chapter.
Alonso ends the speculation
The two-time world champion had said his decision would depend in part on the direction of Formula 1âs regulations. He has strongly criticised the 2026 rulesetâs greater emphasis on electric power and, while weighing his future, held meetings with F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem. His decision follows a period of speculation, including earlier reports on Aston Martinâs hopes of keeping Alonso beyond 2026.
âIâm very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin,â Alonso said. âI took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level.â
He said he was committed to the team for the long term and believed in what it was building, pointing to its leadership, people, partners and facilities. Alonso also thanked the fans for the atmosphere they create at the circuit.
Alonso joined Aston Martin from Alpine for 2023 and made a striking start, taking six podiums in his first eight grands prix before adding two more that year. The results since then have been more difficult, with the team outdeveloped by rivals and struggling through the start of the 2026 rules cycle.
Stroll also extends his stay
Aston Martin has endured a particularly challenging 2026 season. After 15 rounds, it sits 10th in the standings with three points, all scored by Alonso, and is ahead only of newcomer Cadillac. The source attributes part of the teamâs poor start to an uncompetitive Honda engine.
Stroll, who joined from Williams, is set for a ninth season with the Silverstone outfit. âIâve been on this journey since the beginning and I believe we have the resources and the people to become a winning team,â he said, adding that his commitment was stronger than ever.
Team owner Lawrence Stroll said Alonso and Lance had been crucial to the teamâs journey. He welcomed their experience and commitment, while noting that the immediate priority remains improving performance and that the teamâs long-term aim is to win.
The renewals provide continuity amid a difficult campaign. For Alonso, they also make clear that his future in Formula 1 will extend into 2027, with Aston Martin the team he intends to help move forward.
