Lando Norris Swaps Formula 1 for Hypercar Testing in Portimão

McLaren has released exclusive behind-the-scenes footage capturing Lando Norris stepping outside the world of single-seaters to pilot the company’s future endurance machinery.

Following a strong third-place finish at the recent Spanish Grand Prix held at the new Madring circuit, the 2025 Formula 1 champion transitioned from the high-downforce world of F1 to the rugged requirements of the MCL-HY. The testing session took place at the Algarve International Circuit in Portimão, serving as a critical development milestone for the Woking-based outfit's 2027 World Endurance Championship (WEC) campaign.

A Different Kind of Challenge

Accompanied by McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown, Norris underwent a comprehensive engineering briefing before taking to the track. The shift in cockpit environment was immediate.

“Bit different, had a roof over my head!” Norris remarked after completing his initial run. “It’s just different to what I’m used to, but good fun.”

The Briton demonstrated impressive stamina and focus, completing 38 laps and covering a total distance of 177km. While the MCL-HY hypercar testing represents a significant departure from his usual duties, the technical crossover remains a priority for the team.

Providing Critical Data for 2027

Beyond the novelty of driving a closed-cockpit machine, Norris’s involvement was deeply rooted in technical development. The driver emphasized that his primary goal was to assist the McLaren Hypercar Team during their intense preparations for next season.

“I think we also collected some valuable data, and I hope I was able to bring a different set of feelings, comments, and perspectives on things, which is useful for the team in this crucial testing period,” Norris explained.

For the driver, the opportunity was a rare chance to engage with machinery outside the Formula 1 ecosystem. “I’ve not done a proper test in anything other than an F1 car for years now, so the fact I got to try something different, especially still as part of the McLaren family, was very special. It was a fun day in a quick car on a cool track, helping the team prepare for the start of WEC next year.”

As McLaren accelerates its progress toward the 2027 WEC season, the insights gathered from a driver of Norris's caliber will undoubtedly be instrumental in refining the MCL-HY's performance.
