Charles Leclerc confirms vision issue after Monza crash
Charles Leclerc has offered further detail on the physical aftermath of his Italian Grand Prix crash, confirming that a brief problem with his right-eye vision was the main concern immediately after the impact.
The Ferrari driver lost control at high speed on lap two at Monza and hit the barriers at the exit of Parabolica. The incident marked his third retirement of the 2026 season. Although Leclerc was cleared by the medical centre, he said he would undergo additional checks before confirming his fitness for this weekendâs Spanish Grand Prix in Madrid.
âThe neck was OK, it was just the vision a little bit at first,â Leclerc said on Sunday. âThe right eye was not showing me great vision, but now it's all good, so that's the thing I was most worried of getting off the car.â
Four days later, in the Madring paddock, the Monegasque made clear that the eyesight issue had lasted only a few seconds and had not seriously threatened his participation in Madrid.
Vision problem lasted only seconds
Asked whether the problem had made him doubt he could drive, Leclerc replied: âNo, not to that extent.â
He explained that the neck tightness and some pain returned on Monday, but that his vision had recovered almost immediately after he left the car.
âIn terms of vision it was very short. Right after I got into the [medical] car, one eye was, I don't know, maybe not working properly â but then it was fully fine after a few seconds, so I was not too worried,â he said. âI knew it was a big shunt, and obviously that's never a good thing for the body, but straight away then I could see quite nicely.â
Leclerc described the crash as a substantial impact and said he felt unwell initially, although he attributed that feeling to the shock. He was slightly bruised and underwent several checks and treatments during the first two days, with most of the attention focused on his neck.
âI did many checks and everything was fine,â he said, adding that the medical examination covered a range of areas that he could not recall in detail.
