How Ugo Ugochukwu turned a 15-point deficit into the 2026 F3 title

Ugo Ugochukwu is the 2026 FIA Formula 3 Drivers' Champion. The Campos Racing driver outduelled rival Freddie Slater to the crown in Madrid, overturning a 15-point deficit across the decisive weekend.

The Monza Fightback

There was early promise – Ugochukwu climbed to P13 in the Sprint, showing the raw pace he possessed. But Sunday dealt him a heavy blow when he was tagged into a spin by his own team-mate, Théophile Nael, at the start of the Monza Feature Race, dropping the American to last.

Then the fightback began. As the struggling Slater fell through the field with an issue, Ugochukwu was moving in the opposite direction. The TRIDENT eventually stopped on track while Ugochukwu took the chequered flag in P8.

At one stage, the deficit looming over the Madrid decider had been more than 40 points. Ugochukwu left Italy just 15 behind. The mood inside the Campos camp was understandably upbeat – they knew this was the best case scenario, and they carried that momentum with them.

A Huge Friday in Madrid

Campos and Ugochukwu had been quick in Madrid's in-season test last month, setting the fastest time and leading two of the four sessions. Slater and TRIDENT countered by topping the other two, so both camps arrived confident that Free Practice form would be competitive.

Qualifying delivered the twist. An issue forced Slater to pit early in Qualifying 1, leaving him P17, while Ugochukwu claimed fourth. Slater salvaged eighth in Qualifying 2 despite the trouble, but it was not enough – Ugochukwu took second, narrowly missing pole by just 0.022s.

Keeping It Clean in the Races

Ugochukwu held the upper hand going into the races, with Slater forced to fight through the field from P17 in the Sprint and the first Feature. The American took P8 in the reverse-grid Sprint while his rival languished in P18. Slater then crashed out of Feature Race 1 as Ugochukwu finished fourth.

That crash underlined the pendulum swing. At the very moment Slater hit the wall, Ugochukwu was running wheel-to-wheel with Jin Nakamura, narrowly avoiding the barrier at Turn 5. The fine margins of the title fight were on full display – and it meant the pair went into the final Feature Race level on points.

19 Laps of Quiet Drama

Waking up on Sunday, Ugochukwu knew a clean race would make him champion. A clean getaway and first few corners from second would put one hand on the trophy, and that is precisely what he delivered.

The only improvement he might have wanted was taking the lead from Taponen at Turn 1, but the Finnish driver cut him off well at the start. From there it became a case of ticking off the laps without mistakes, forcing Slater to do all the chasing.

Ugochukwu sat within DRS range of Taponen for much of the race, ensuring he was never at risk of having to defend from Clerot, before crossing the line second. With Slater seventh, the championship was sealed by 14 points.

A title is a season-long affair – from the opening round in Melbourne to the finale in Madrid, Ugochukwu scored more points than every other driver. But in a championship this close, some moments count for more. That P8 in the Monza Feature Race might not have been his best result of the season, but it was vital.
