Ugo Ugochukwu seals 2026 Formula 3 title after Madring showdown

Ugo Ugochukwu became the 2026 Formula 3 champion on Sunday, converting a measured Madring weekend into a decisive victory over Trident’s Freddie Slater.

The championship had been shaped by consistency. Across the first seven rounds, Slater had taken six feature-race podiums, while Ugochukwu had five. No other driver had scored more than two top-three finishes on a Sunday. Slater then lost momentum at Monza: after finishing second in the sprint, he fell down the order from pole in the feature race before retiring with a technical problem.

A controlled finale, not a desperate one

Ugochukwu finished eighth in the sprint and fourth in the first feature race. Slater failed to score in those contests, meaning the title would go to whoever produced the stronger result on Sunday.

Ugochukwu handled that pressure with precision. He spent the feature race in second place, close enough to control the championship but without a realistic opportunity to challenge Tuukka Taponen for victory. Equally importantly, he did not need to defend his position aggressively.

Slater lost a place to Yevan David at the start, then reclaimed eighth by passing the Sri Lankan around the outside of Turn 1 on lap five. It was not enough. Ugochukwu’s second place secured the crown.

“We knew that P2 would clinch the title, so just had to ultimately bring it home,” Ugochukwu said. “Once I crossed the finish line, I could relax. Just really relieved.”

The result also completed a second title success over Slater, after Ugochukwu prevailed in their Formula Regional European championship fight over the winter.

Redemption for Campos driver

For Ugochukwu, the championship represents a sharp turnaround after he finished his maiden F3 season 16th and left the McLaren junior programme at the end of last year. He credited Campos for its work throughout the campaign, especially after the team secured the teams’ championship on Saturday.

“We were super clinical, no mistakes made the whole weekend, and we just delivered when we had to and picked up the points,” he said. “Perfect way to end the season.”
