Verstappen could confirm Red Bull future at 2026 Dutch Grand Prix
Verstappen’s Zandvoort decision looms
Max Verstappen returns to Zandvoort for the final Dutch Grand Prix on the Formula 1 calendar with more than a home victory at stake. The Red Bull driver could use this weekend’s race to announce that he will remain with the team for the 2027 season.
Zandvoort’s departure follows a one-year extension for 2026 rather than a new multi-year agreement. It brings the circuit’s brief return to Formula 1 to a close after its comeback in 2021. Verstappen has been the defining figure of that revival, winning the Dutch Grand Prix in 2021, 2022 and 2023.
The event’s final edition therefore provides a natural stage for a decision that has dominated the driver market. Verstappen entered the 2026 summer break outside the top two in the drivers’ standings, meaning he has until October—or, reportedly, the Singapore Grand Prix—to activate a release clause in his Red Bull contract, which runs through 2028.
Why Red Bull remains Verstappen’s likely choice
Verstappen has been linked with Mercedes, McLaren and, to a lesser extent, Ferrari. However, the available alternatives have narrowed. McLaren has rejected suggestions that he could replace Oscar Piastri, Mercedes is expected to retain George Russell alongside Andrea Kimi Antonelli, and Ferrari has Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc under contract.
That leaves Verstappen with limited options for 2027: stay at Red Bull, take a season away from Formula 1 or accept a move that would represent a step backwards. Autosport WEB reports that “no one” would be surprised if he announced his Red Bull future on Thursday at Zandvoort.
A 2027 commitment would not necessarily settle the longer-term picture. Verstappen could keep his options open for 2028 if Red Bull fails to improve the RB22, meaning he could remain a major factor in next year’s driver market.
The RB22 is the key factor
Verstappen’s frustration is rooted in both the 2026 engine regulations and the car’s persistent balance problems. Red Bull’s attempts to reduce the RB22’s weight have not solved its aerodynamic degradation, which continues to damage its handling.
The four-time champion has described the car as a “disaster”, “undrivable” and “completely broken”. He also failed to win a Grand Prix before the summer break for the first time since 2017.
Red Bull is reluctant to pursue a quick fix that would add weight, while Verstappen is said to want guarantees that he can fight for victories or the 2027 title. At Zandvoort, the final Dutch Grand Prix may reveal whether the champion’s next chapter begins with Red Bull—or with another decision entirely.
