Wheldon secures TRIDENT seat for 2027 Formula 3 campaign

Sebastian Wheldon will make the move to FIA Formula 3 in 2027, joining TRIDENT after finishing second in this year’s Formula Regional European Championship.
The Italian team confirmed the American’s signing for next season, giving him a seat in the category after a steady progression through junior single-seater racing. Wheldon said he was ready for the challenge of joining one of F3’s most successful outfits and would focus on learning quickly and delivering results. He also thanked TWG Motorsports and Andretti Global for their support.

Wheldon’s results build toward an F3 step
Wheldon began his single-seater career in 2023 by winning the Skip Barber Formula Race Series, taking six victories. The following year, he finished second in the YACademy Winter Series before placing third overall in USF Juniors.
His 2025 campaign brought seven wins across the F4 Middle East, E4 and Italian F4 championships. In the Italian series, he finished third overall, recording six victories, three pole positions and nine podiums.

The most recent step has been in Formula Regional, where Wheldon ended the season as runner-up. That result helped secure his move into F3 with TRIDENT, with team manager Giacomo Ricci describing the American’s progress in both the United States and Europe as consistent. Ricci said the team believed it could provide a suitable environment for the next stage of Wheldon’s career.
TRIDENT adds to its 2027 plans
The signing puts Wheldon on the team’s Formula 3 roster for next season. TRIDENT has also confirmed James Wharton for its 2027 Formula 2 campaign, as reported in our piece on Wharton’s deal with the team.
Wheldon’s promotion adds to TRIDENT’s recent Formula 3 announcements, including its confirmation of Kean Nakamura-Berta’s move into the category.
For Wheldon, the task now is to turn a strong record in the junior categories into a competitive start at the next level. He has called the move a demanding challenge, but said he was eager for the new season to begin.
