
Formula 1 arrives in Madrid with almost no real-world tyre data to rely on, making the inaugural Spanish Grand Prix at MADRING one of the biggest strategic unknowns of the season.
Pirelli has selected the C2 as Hard, C3 as Medium and C4 as Soft, a relatively conservative choice for a circuit expected to place significant energy through the tyres despite its partially urban character.

The objective is clear: provide enough durability for the circuit's demanding sections while still leaving enough performance separation between compounds to make a two-stop race a realistic option.
The 5.416-kilometre circuit combines fast sections, heavy braking zones and medium-speed corners, but the biggest challenge will be Turn 12, La Monumental.
The 550-metre banked corner, with approximately 24% banking, is expected to generate some of the highest vertical tyre loads of the 2026 season.
As explained in our MADRING circuit preview, the corner could also offer multiple racing lines, adding another variable for drivers trying to balance pace and tyre preservation.
Pirelli's simulations place MADRING among the most demanding tracks of the year in terms of tyre energy, which explains why the softer C5 has not been selected.

The newly laid surface is expected to be very smooth and initially low in grip.
That could increase sliding during the early sessions, particularly while drivers learn the circuit, generating additional tyre temperature despite the relatively low surface roughness.
Track evolution should therefore be significant across the weekend as more rubber is deposited.
This makes Friday especially important. Teams will need to understand not only degradation, but also how quickly each compound reaches its ideal operating window.

Pirelli's simulations suggest the C2-C3-C4 combination should make two stops competitive, particularly if temperatures are high or degradation proves stronger than expected.
The C3 Medium is likely to become the key race tyre, offering a compromise between durability and warm-up performance.
The C2 Hard should provide greater protection against overheating, although bringing it up to temperature on such a smooth surface could be challenging. The C4 Soft should dominate qualifying but may prove more difficult to manage over longer race stints.
A one-stop strategy cannot be ruled out, particularly if the pit-lane time loss is significant, but teams have no historical race data to help make that calculation.

The tyre picture will also interact with Formula 1's new active-aerodynamics system.
MADRING features two Straight Mode sections, where cars will reduce drag before arriving at major braking zones.
That means drivers will repeatedly move from low-load straight-line running into high-energy cornering and braking phases.
Managing those temperature swings could become particularly important around La Monumental and the final sector.

Pirelli has spent years modelling MADRING, but simulation can only go so far.
The teams still need to discover how quickly the asphalt evolves, how much the tyres slide, how severe thermal degradation becomes and whether the Soft can realistically play a role beyond qualifying.

The C2-C3-C4 allocation gives teams flexibility, but Friday practice will determine whether Sunday's race becomes a genuine two-stop strategic battle or another exercise in stretching tyre life.
