Kimi Antonelli will start the United States Grand Prix from pole with a first opportunity to seal the Drivers’ Championship. But the Mercedes driver’s title hopes hinge on more than a strong start at the Circuit of the Americas: he needs to win, while George Russell must finish ninth or lower and Lewis Hamilton fifth or lower.

Russell starts sixth and Hamilton fifth, leaving Antonelli with a clear task of his own and two results to watch. If the required combination does not arrive, his next chance to clinch the crown will come in Mexico. The prospect of a historic title has put the spotlight firmly on the young Italian; Kimi Räikkönen has backed Antonelli to become the youngest F1 world champion.

Verstappen starts close enough to challenge for another win

Max Verstappen lines up second, with Isack Hadjar third, as Red Bull seeks a third consecutive victory. The team has followed its first win of the season, achieved with its own power unit, with another triumph in Singapore. That run gives Verstappen a chance to apply pressure from the front rows while Antonelli tries to convert pole into the result he needs.

Red Bull also has a fresh reason to celebrate after its driver Alisha Palmowski secured the 2026 F1 Academy title on Saturday. Hadjar’s position behind Verstappen gives the team two cars near the front as it pursues another strong Sunday.

Ferrari must recover after losing ground in qualifying

Ferrari had led the way in practice but could not carry that form through qualifying. Charles Leclerc starts fourth, with Hamilton fifth, and the team will need to make up ground if it is to challenge for a podium. The source of Ferrari’s lost opportunity was clear: the pace had been there on Friday, but Saturday did not deliver a front-row start.

Midfield fight and home hopes add to the grid’s tension

Liam Lawson starts ninth as the leading midfield runner, ahead of Pierre Gasly in 10th. Nico Hülkenberg and Fernando Alonso are also in contention for points, while rookie Arvid Lindblad drops from the top ten to 14th after a five-place engine penalty. His recovery drive could add another variable to the race.

The two American teams face a tougher starting position. Haas has Oliver Bearman 13th and Esteban Ocon 15th; Cadillac starts 19th and 20th. Bearman is close enough to target the points, while the Cadillac pair have a longer climb ahead. Antonelli’s Spanish Grand Prix victory showed what he can do from the front—but Austin offers the added prize of a possible championship clincher.
