BBC reportedly developing documentary on Hamilton-Alonso rivalry
Antonio Lobato says the BBC is preparing a documentary on Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso’s turbulent 2007 McLaren season.

The BBC is reportedly preparing a documentary about Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso’s turbulent 2007 season as teammates at McLaren. The broadcaster has not confirmed the project.
The claim came from former Spanish Formula 1 commentator Antonio Lobato, who discussed the reported documentary on SoyMotor.com’s Twitch channel earlier this week. Lobato, now co-director of the Spanish outlet, said he had been invited to take part but declined, explaining that he preferred to watch the finished programme. He added that other journalists who covered the season are expected to appear.
The project would revisit a campaign that left both drivers level on points, but neither with the title. Their rivalry remains a defining chapter in the careers of two drivers still competing in Formula 1. Hamilton’s present-day Ferrari campaign is also under scrutiny, as explored in our look at his 2026 title prospects.
The 2007 title fight ended with both drivers one point short
Alonso joined McLaren as the reigning two-time champion, while Hamilton began his first season in Formula 1 alongside him. Tension increased as the year progressed, with the pair ultimately finishing on 109 points each. Both were one point behind Kimi Raikkonen, who took the drivers’ championship.

McLaren was excluded from the constructors’ championship over Spygate, and Alonso left the team at the end of the season to return to Renault. The documentary, if made, would revisit how that contentious year unfolded through the accounts of people who witnessed it.
Both rivals remain active nearly two decades later
Hamilton is third in the 2026 drivers’ standings with Ferrari on 229 points, while Alonso has seven points with Aston Martin. The two are due to race at the United States Grand Prix in Austin from 23 to 25 October.
Alonso’s current Aston Martin chapter is covered in our report on his commitment to the team for 2027. For now, the BBC documentary remains unconfirmed; Lobato says he intends to watch it when it is released and see how the story is presented.
