Cadillac CEO rejects Rafael Camara reports but leaves 2027 door open
Cadillac plays down Rafael Camara speculation
Cadillac Formula 1 CEO Dan Towriss has rejected reports that the team is targeting Ferrari junior Rafael Camara for a race seat in 2027, while acknowledging that the situation could still change before next season.
Reports at the Hungarian Grand Prix claimed the Ferrari-powered outfit was monitoring Camara as a potential replacement for one of its experienced drivers. The possibility would most likely put Valtteri Bottas under pressure, although Sergio Perez would also be affected if Cadillac opted to promote a young driver.
The speculation follows a strong start to Camaraâs rookie Formula 2 campaign. The Invicta Racing driver, who is the reigning Formula 3 champion, has taken four of the last six pole positions and won two races. He sits third in the driversâ championship, 22 points behind leader Nikola Tsolov.
Camara has also been linked with other Formula 1 opportunities, although he has said he is concentrating on his F2 title campaign. His current form has made him one of the most closely watched drivers on the junior ladder, as outlined in Camara blocks out Haas rumours to focus on F2 title fight.
Towriss confirms no Cadillac lineup changes are planned
Speaking at a press conference held for Marcin Budkowskiâs appointment as team principal, Towriss said Cadillac was satisfied with its current pairing of Perez and Bottas.
âIt's a great question, whether a younger driver [can] come in and push the team. It's certainly something that we think about,â Towriss said. âWe've got two experienced drivers that we're very happy with, that are pushing the team, and we'll continue to push them.â
He dismissed the Camara reports as unsubstantiated and insisted the team was not currently focused on driver changes.
âI know there's been some of the rumours out there with some of the young drivers,â Towriss added. âThey're not substantiated, so that's not something I would focus on. We're not focused on that at the moment.â
However, he stopped short of closing the door on a change for 2027. âThere are no changes planned at the moment for â27, but things can always change,â he said.
Budkowski was also asked whether signing Camara would strengthen Cadillacâs relationship with Ferrari, but he did not directly answer. Instead, the incoming team principal focused on how Cadillac can maximise the potential of its Ferrari power unit.
