Camara targets number 50 for Haas F1 debut in 2027
Rafael Camara says he hopes to race with number 50 when he makes his Formula 1 debut for Haas in 2027, pending FIA confirmation.

Rafael Camara says he hopes to use number 50 when he makes his Formula 1 debut with Haas in 2027. The number has a personal connection, but it will not be confirmed until the FIA publishes the official entry list.
The Brazilian is set to replace Esteban Ocon next season after earning promotion from Formula 2. Read more about Haas confirming Camara’s 2027 debut.
Camara chose 50 for its link to his birthday
Camara’s first preference was number five, but Gabriel Bortoleto is already using it. He instead settled on 50, explaining that his birthday is 05/05/2005. The idea took shape after he discussed the choice with his father, who saw the connection between the date and the number.
Haas has also run number 50 during practice appearances. Reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa used it in FP1 sessions, while Camara’s likely team-mate Ollie Bearman carried it during substitute outings in 2024.
Algarve test helped secure the Haas opportunity
Before the promotion, Camara competed with Hirakawa for Ocon’s seat in a Testing of Previous Cars session at Portugal’s Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. The two-day test put him in a new car, at a new circuit and with a new team. He said he focused on learning quickly and making the most of the opportunity despite the pressure.
Camara was pleased with his performance and said he had done everything he could. Team Principal Ayao Komatsu was impressed enough to offer him a full-time drive. More on Komatsu’s view of why Camara won the seat.
The call from Komatsu came while Camara was in Milan. He said his first reaction was to ask whether the offer was certain, before sharing the news with his parents in person. Camara credited their sacrifices in helping him turn a childhood passion into a career, despite the family having no background in motorsport.
His 2027 number remains subject to formal confirmation, but Camara has made clear which option he wants: 50, chosen for the date that marks his birthday.
