2026 Dutch Grand Prix strategy guide: the available options

McLaren resume where they left off

McLaren have returned from the summer break with the same competitive edge they showed before it. Lando Norris took pole by the narrowest of margins, while the papaya cars looked like the class of the field throughout all three parts of qualifying.

What’s the fastest way to the flag this time?

This is an interesting year for Zandvoort. When F1 first returned here, the expectation was for a race where overtaking would be very, very difficult. That was largely borne-out in 2021, but when ground-effect arrived in 2022, and the DRS zone was extended back into the final corner banking, overtaking became normalised.

The question to ask now is: will the new cars, with a little bit less downforce and Overtake Mode instead of DRS, find passing quite so accessible? If the teams think they can overtake, then a two-stop race gains in popularity; if they think it’s going to be difficult, then track position rules the roost, and it’s a one-stop.

After the Sprint, Pirelli were leaning towards the latter – in their simulations, the fastest way to the flag is a medium>hard one-stop, with a pit window between Laps 27-33.

“Putting together all of the data in terms of degradation performance and wear figures, we think the one-stop strategy will be the way to go,” says Dario Marrafuschi, director of motorsport. “One-stop because overtaking looks quite difficult, and on a two-stop you may run into problems with traffic.”

The Grand Prix is a different game

The key difference between the Sprint and the Grand Prix is not simply distance. It is the presence of strategic variety.

Over the longer race, teams have multiple routes to the finish. An undercut can be used to gain track position, while going long may create a different opportunity later in the race. Drivers and pit walls can also build a meaningful tyre delta, using contrasting tyre ages to create performance at the moments that matter.

That range of options was unavailable in the same way during the Sprint. The shorter format offered less room to reshape the race, making sustained rear-grip problems particularly visible. The Grand Prix, by contrast, gives McLaren the chance to use strategy to manage — or potentially offset — that concern.

Tyre allocation adds another variable

The strategic contest will also be shaped by the fact that not every driver is taking the same approach to tyre allocation. That means the opening phase may not reveal the full picture. Different starting choices can create different priorities: defending position, extending a stint, or forcing rivals to react earlier than planned.

For McLaren, pole provides the platform, but not the guarantee. The team must now turn qualifying speed into a race plan capable of handling the rear-grip challenge seen in the Sprint. The Grand Prix promises to be a game of chess — only this time, the pieces will be moving at 330km/h.
