Formula 3: Tuukka Taponen takes Qualifying 2 pole at MADRING

Tuukka Taponen delivered when it mattered at MADRING, taking Formula 3 Qualifying 2 pole position with a late 1:49.750 to beat championship contender Ugo Ugochukwu by just 0.021 seconds.

As outlined in our MADRING guide, the new Madrid circuit had already been used for Formula 3 testing, but qualifying provided the first real competitive benchmark around the 5.414-kilometre layout.

Slater responds early after Qualifying 1 problems

Taito Kato initially set the benchmark at 1:50.847, before Slater responded with a 1:49.972, briefly moving to the top after producing two purple sectors.

The order changed rapidly from there.

Kato lowered the target to 1:49.916 before Ugochukwu went faster still with a 1:49.901. Pedro Clerot then moved ahead as the circuit continued to improve, underlining how quickly grip was building during the 20-minute session.

With the championship on the line, Ugochukwu looked increasingly comfortable.

Ugochukwu applies pressure in the title fight

The Campos Racing driver found another step in the closing minutes, producing a 1:49.771 to reclaim provisional pole.

It was exactly the response Ugochukwu needed.

He arrived in Madrid 15 points behind Slater after recovering ground during the Monza finale, and starting Sunday's race from the front row gives him a valuable opportunity to put further pressure on his rival.

Slater's afternoon, by contrast, became complicated once again.

The TRIDENT driver returned to the pits late in the session as the technical problem that had already disrupted Qualifying 1 appeared to persist. With the track improving rapidly, losing those final opportunities proved costly.

Taponen delivers at the decisive moment

While the championship protagonists fought their own battle, Taponen quietly put together the fastest lap of the session.

The MP Motorsport driver stopped the clock at 1:49.750, edging Ugochukwu by only 0.021s and securing pole for the final Feature Race of the 2026 season.

It was a clinical lap at exactly the right moment.

Taponen had already shown strong pace in recent rounds, including a podium at Monza, and once again demonstrated his ability to maximise the car when the track was at its fastest.

Behind him, the fight for third ended dramatically.

Clerot was on another competitive lap when he hit the barriers in the final sector, only metres from completing his run. His earlier effort was still enough to secure third place, but the accident ended any chance of challenging Taponen for pole.

A crucial grid for Sunday's title decider

Taponen will therefore start Sunday's final Feature Race from pole, with Ugochukwu alongside him on the front row and Clerot third.

For Taponen, it represents an opportunity to finish the season with another major result.

For Ugochukwu, the stakes are considerably higher.

With Slater unable to capitalise on the final minutes of qualifying, the Campos driver has given himself a strong platform from which to attack the championship leader in the season finale.

MADRING was always expected to produce an unpredictable conclusion to the Formula 3 campaign.

After Qualifying 2, the title fight is very much alive.
