Verstappen says F1 rules are preventing drivers from making a difference
Verstappen questions the impact of F1’s new energy rules
Max Verstappen believes Formula 1’s 2026 regulations are limiting the influence drivers can have during races, with energy deployment becoming so important that gaining time in one part of a lap can create a disadvantage in another.
The new rules have introduced a more electric-focused era and forced drivers to adapt to a markedly different style of racing. Battery management is now central to their approach. Use too much energy too early and a driver can become vulnerable to rivals behind, turning deployment strategy into a constant compromise.
An onboard system is designed to manage how that energy is used, theoretically making the process easier for the drivers. Verstappen, however, believes the system is flawed and can prevent them from converting speed into a genuine competitive advantage.
“With your throttle input, by being faster sometimes in the corners, you lose more on the straights afterwards,” Verstappen told media.
That outcome, he suggested, runs against the basic logic of racing. A driver who gains time through a corner would normally expect to keep that advantage rather than be penalised on the following straight. Under the current system, the trade-off can force drivers to adjust their gear selection, braking technique and throttle application simply to avoid losing performance later in the lap.
‘You just cannot make a difference’
Verstappen expanded on the criticism by arguing that the regulations are neutralising too much of the lap time drivers might otherwise create themselves.
“You need to be different, and basically it is just neutralising a lot of lap time,” he said. “And that’s why, I guess, in general, you see a lot of close battles between teams and teammates. Because you just cannot make a difference.”
The Red Bull driver then sharpened his point: “Like you’re not allowed to make a difference.” The reason, he explained, is that any gain can be offset by the penalty that follows on the next straight.
His comments add to the ongoing debate around the 2026 regulations. Stefano Domenicali has defended F1’s new rules, but Verstappen’s assessment focuses on the driver’s experience from inside the cockpit: a technically demanding system that may be reducing the scope for individual performance to shape a race.
Verstappen currently sits sixth in the standings and is preparing for his final home race at Zandvoort next week, where the Dutchman will return to the spotlight under a ruleset he believes is restricting the difference drivers can make.
