How does WEC Hyperpole qualifying work?
How does WEC Hyperpole work? Learn the regular qualifying format and the separate 2026 Le Mans Q, H1 and H2 knockout procedure.

Hyperpole is WEC's final qualifying shootout, deciding the leading grid positions after an opening session narrows the field.
However, the regular championship format and the 2026 24 Hours of Le Mans format are different.
How does qualifying work at regular WEC rounds?
Hypercar and LMGT3 have separate qualifying blocks.
The standard schedule gives each class a 12-minute opening session, followed by a 10-minute Hyperpole for its fastest ten cars. The sporting regulations specify minimum durations, with event provisions able to set the timetable.

The opening session establishes positions from 11th backwards. The ten successful cars then compete for the first ten positions using their Hyperpole lap times.
It is the fastest relevant lap that counts, rather than an average across the crew.
Who drives in LMGT3 qualifying?
At regular 2026 WEC rounds, a Bronze driver contests the initial LMGT3 session and a Silver driver contests Hyperpole.
This is one reason the driver rating beside a name matters. The same car can have different drivers for the two stages.

How was Le Mans Hyperpole different in 2026?
Le Mans used three stages: qualifying, Hyperpole 1 and Hyperpole 2.
The opening sessions lasted at least 30 minutes, with Hypercars separated from the combined LMP2/LMGT3 session.
The fastest 15 cars in each class advanced to H1, a 20-minute session. The fastest ten then reached H2, lasting 15 minutes.

H2 determined the leading ten positions. Cars eliminated in H1 occupied positions 11–15 according to that session, with the remaining order established through opening qualifying.
Do all three Le Mans drivers participate?
A crew reaching all three stages must use different drivers in Q, H1 and H2.
LMGT3's initial qualifying remained the Bronze driver's responsibility, but Le Mans removed the restriction limiting Hyperpole participation to Silver drivers.

What if qualifying is interrupted?
Red flags, cancelled sessions, deleted laps and penalties can change the outcome. A provisional order is therefore not always the final grid.
