Germany back on Formula 1’s long-term radar

Formula 1 will “definitely” return to Germany, according to Stefano Domenicali, as discussions continue over the country’s potential reintroduction to the calendar.

The sport’s expansion under Liberty Media has strengthened its global reach, but it has also left several traditional venues fighting to preserve their place. Spa-Francorchamps is set to become a rotational event, while other established circuits face similarly uncertain futures. Against that backdrop, Formula 1 is examining the possibility of reconnecting with several of its historic markets.

Germany is among the most significant candidates. The German Grand Prix first appeared on the calendar in 1926 and was staged at several circuits before the Hockenheimring became its established home. The event was last held under its traditional name in 2019, when a wet-weather race produced a dramatic victory for Max Verstappen and saw Sebastian Vettel recover from 20th on the grid to finish second.

Germany then returned for one final event in 2020, with the Nürburgring hosting the race under the Eifel Grand Prix title.

Mercedes and Audi strengthen the case

Domeniali believes the presence of major manufacturers and partners with German bases gives the market renewed importance. Mercedes remains on the grid, while Audi has also entered the business, creating a stronger commercial foundation for future discussions.

“With regard to the potential, I would say that we don’t have to forget that we have Audi that stepped into the business,” Domenicali said. “We have Mercedes. We have big partners that have their home base in Germany.”

He added that Germany must now consider whether it can return to the calendar in the medium term and recover its status as one of Formula 1’s most important markets. That broader commercial logic reflects the sport’s continuing expansion, a trend also examined in Formula 1 has become “the place to be”.

A return would be deliberate, not temporary

Since Formula 1’s last German event, the calendar has grown to 24 races and now includes as many as six Sprint events. Domenicali therefore stressed that a German return would not be a short-notice addition or a brief experiment.

“It will not be, in that case, a short-term call, but definitely will happen,” he said, describing the development as “very, very important” to remember.

Formula 1 is also considering expansion into Africa and the Indian subcontinent, with potential returns for Kyalami and the Indian Grand Prix. Germany, however, is now positioned as a clear long-term target.
