Komatsu Dismisses Concerns Over Potential Ferrari-Heavy Haas Line-up

Haas F1 Team principal Ayao Komatsu has firmly rejected the notion that fielding two Ferrari junior drivers would be a cause for concern for the team's future. As the squad works toward finalizing its driver roster for the 2027 campaign, the focus remains squarely on raw speed rather than academy affiliations.

Priority on Performance Over Pedigree

“It doesn't really matter to me at all,” Komatsu told media. “We really want two fast drivers because that's the best way to grow this team. It doesn't matter if it's two Ferrari drivers or two Toyota drivers or two McLaren drivers... Honestly, it doesn't matter. Whoever is the fastest, that's the best one.”

This meritocratic approach is particularly vital as the team seeks to recover from a difficult period. Having endured a challenging season with zero points in their last eight outings, the team is looking for stability and growth. As McLaren and Ferrari battle to shape Haas’ 2027 driver decision, the pressure to select the most optimal pairing is immense.

Motivation Through Optimal Selection

For Komatsu, the driver selection process is about more than just the two names on the entry list; it is about motivating the entire organization. He emphasized that the 400-strong workforce at Haas needs to believe they have the best possible talent behind the wheel to maximize the car's potential.

“For everybody, 400 people working here, they need to know we got the best driver choice that we can get hold of, so that these are the best two drivers that getting the best out of the car,” Komatsu explained.

He further warned against the temptation to prioritize financial considerations over competitive edge, noting that choosing a slower driver for a higher salary would be counterproductive.

“Imagine taking somebody half a second off for extra money - that's not going to be very motivating... I've always said to take driver by performance, and that's what we're doing.”
