
McLaren’s 2026 campaign has been shaped by reliability problems, strategic miscalculations and an MCL40 that has struggled to reproduce the dominance of its predecessors. For Oscar Piastri, however, the central question is more difficult than simply identifying what went wrong: how much of his 55-point deficit to Lando Norris has been created by the team, and how much by the Australian himself?
Piastri entered the new regulatory era with a strong foundation. After finishing third in the 2025 Drivers’ Championship, winning seven Grands Prix and spending the season in contention for the title, he had established himself as one of the grid’s most complete young drivers. His reputation rested on more than outright speed. Racecraft, qualifying improvement, tyre management, consistency and composure under pressure had all become important parts of his profile.


Yet after the Dutch Grand Prix, Piastri sits seventh in the championship on 104 points. Norris is fourth on 159. The gap is substantial, but the standings do not tell the entire story. Piastri’s campaign has included two consecutive Did Not Starts, mechanical failures, compromised strategy calls and a car that has not consistently delivered the aerodynamic platform McLaren enjoyed under the previous regulations.

At the same time, Norris has repeatedly extracted more from the same MCL40 when the margins have been smallest. That makes Piastri’s season neither a straightforward tale of bad luck nor a simple verdict on driver performance. McLaren have cost Piastri points, but Piastri has also left points on the table.

The first two Grands Prix distorted Piastri’s season before he had the chance to establish any momentum. At Albert Park, he crashed on the reconnaissance lap and was unable to start. That incident was self-inflicted. China, by contrast, was entirely different.
After qualifying fifth for the Sprint weekend, Piastri could not start the Grand Prix after an electrical problem affected his MCL40. McLaren ultimately failed to get either car onto the grid, producing a double DNS and denying both drivers the opportunity to score Grand Prix points. F1 later confirmed that the two failures were linked to the same electrical-side power-unit component.

For Piastri, the consequence was two consecutive rounds without a Grand Prix start. Andrea Stella acknowledged the competitive and psychological effect, saying, “If we consider that Oscar has not been able to start a race in this start of the 2026 campaign, that's pretty difficult for Oscar to process.”
The loss was not limited to the points themselves. A driver needs track time to understand a new car, particularly when the technical regulations have fundamentally changed the way performance is generated. The MCL40 introduced a different challenge, with active aerodynamics, increased electrical deployment and a substantially changed aerodynamic philosophy. Piastri therefore began the campaign at a disadvantage that had little to do with his underlying speed.
When he finally received a clean opportunity, he immediately showed what remained underneath, finishing second in Japan and third in Miami. The pace was present. The continuity was not.

Piastri’s season must be separated from McLaren’s wider decline. The team entered 2026 attempting to transfer two years of development knowledge into a radically different regulatory environment. The MCL40 carried the expectations of a back-to-back Constructors’ Championship-winning operation, but the strengths of its predecessors did not automatically transfer.
McLaren struggled with downforce, tyre behaviour and reliability while learning its new aerodynamic platform. For a driver, that creates a narrow operating window. Setup direction becomes more important, braking stability can be affected by a reduction in aerodynamic load and different tyre characteristics alter how aggressively a driver can attack a stint.

When the field is separated by tenths rather than seconds, the final percentage of performance becomes decisive. This is where Norris has increasingly separated himself from Piastri. F1’s mid-season comparison placed Norris ahead 7–4 in Grand Prix qualifying, while the pair were level 5–5 on race finishes before the summer break.
The qualifying comparison carries particular weight because race results can be distorted by Safety Cars, pit windows and tyre degradation. Qualifying offers a cleaner view of how effectively two drivers extract performance from the same package. On that measure, Norris was consistently finding more.
McLaren’s development direction will remain central to the picture, particularly as the team evaluates whether its latest work can address the weaknesses of the MCL40. That wider technical context is also examined in McLaren’s latest upgrades face their defining Monza test.

If one race most clearly demonstrates McLaren’s role in Piastri’s season, it is Canada. The weather created a difficult strategic problem before the race began, and McLaren chose to start both cars on the intermediate compound because the team believed the wet conditions could persist long enough for the tyre to become advantageous.
Piastri initially supported the call. “It was a group call. I was one of the people that said yes to the intermediates,” he explained.
That context matters. The original choice was not simply imposed on him. Piastri believed the intermediates could be faster if they reached their operating temperature. The conditions then changed quickly. The rain stopped, additional formation laps dried the racing line and the intermediate tyre moved outside its optimum window.
Both McLaren drivers reported that the track was already drier than expected during the formation lap, but it was too late to change tyres before the start. The issue was therefore not merely that Piastri had endorsed the wrong strategy. It was that McLaren could not react quickly enough when the conditions evolved differently from the forecast.

Piastri’s first-lap stop became costly. Switching to slicks so early dropped him behind the pack and left him recovering lost ground for much of the race. The correction addressed the initial tyre misjudgement, but it could not restore the track position that had already been surrendered. Piastri finished 11th and was removed from contention at the front.
Canada draws an important distinction between strategy selection and strategy adaptation. The initial decision can be defended. The failure to respond to the drying track cannot be defended as easily. McLaren were slow to adapt, and Piastri paid the price.

Canada strengthens the case against McLaren, but it does not settle the argument. Norris operates in the same strategic environment, sharing the same engineering philosophy, power-unit architecture, aerodynamic package and tyre allocation.
Norris has also suffered major reliability setbacks. He failed to finish in Canada and Monaco because of separate mechanical problems, while the double DNS in China affected both drivers. Reliability was one of McLaren’s defining weaknesses during the opening half of the campaign.

Piastri therefore cannot claim an exclusive relationship with bad luck. What has been distinctive is how often his compromised weekends have prevented him from building momentum. That is different from saying that every lost point was his responsibility.
Piastri’s own assessment is revealing. At the halfway point of the campaign, he admitted that his season had contained “probably more lows than highs.” He also identified consistency as an area for improvement: “I want to be able to improve and be a bit more consistently on top of my game.”
That is arguably the most important admission in assessing his season. The issue is not whether Piastri has the raw speed to beat Norris. The issue is whether he can repeatedly access it. A driver can be the fastest on a particular weekend and still lose a championship if another driver is more consistently able to extract the car’s performance across the year.

The Hungarian Grand Prix provides the clearest case study because almost every variable was present. Piastri started third and immediately took the lead from Norris. During the first stint, his pace was strong enough to control the race. The MCL40 finally showed the high-speed and medium-speed corner performance McLaren had been pursuing through its upgrades, while Piastri managed tyre degradation effectively.
He had track position and a realistic opportunity to win. The pit-window calculations then became decisive. McLaren brought Piastri in earlier during the second round of stops to cover the undercut threat from Lewis Hamilton, despite Norris asking to pit first. The team maintained its papaya rules and gave pit priority to the driver ahead. Piastri was also struggling with his tyres.

The decision was strategically understandable. McLaren needed to cover Hamilton, and surrendering track position at the Hungaroring carried significant consequences. But the stop placed Piastri back into traffic. He then encountered Carlos Sainz while attempting to navigate the Williams, losing further time. With 14 laps remaining, a gearbox failure ended his race. Norris went on to win; Piastri scored zero points.
It is impossible to categorise Hungary as simply a strategy failure. Piastri had shown winning pace, McLaren’s pit-window decision complicated his race, traffic further compromised him and a mechanical failure finished the job. Norris, crucially, produced the race pace needed to keep the alternative strategy viable.
When Norris was released into clean air, his pace increased dramatically. McLaren’s strategy did not create that performance. Norris did.

The Dutch Grand Prix changed the balance of the analysis. Piastri’s qualifying performance was encouraging: he took fourth in Q3 with a 1:11.305, only 0.142 seconds from Norris’ pole position time. F1 reported that Piastri had looked like the fastest driver on track for much of qualifying, but could not extract the same performance as Norris on the final runs.
The more serious problem appeared over the race distance. After the red flag, Piastri made an excellent move on George Russell to move into third while running the harder compound. He initially maintained competitive pace. A slow stop then dropped him behind Russell and removed his track-position advantage.

That operational error mattered, but it was not the entire explanation. Once Piastri returned to the circuit, his pace fell away, particularly from the second stint onward. Tyre performance appeared to become the central issue as he struggled to maintain the speed shown earlier in the race.
Piastri finished sixth. Norris won. Piastri himself separated the pit-stop problem from the performance deficit: “The first stint felt reasonable, but from the second stint onwards, the pace was simply not there, and it became a real struggle.” He added: “A slow pit stop didn't help, but the fundamental issue was the lack of pace.”
That distinction is critical. The slow stop cost track position. The lack of pace cost the race. When asked why, Piastri admitted that he did not yet have the answer. At that point, the strategy argument reaches its limit.

Zandvoort does not provide a definitive technical diagnosis, but it narrows the question. The close qualifying margin suggests that Piastri’s underlying speed is not the primary concern. The more important issue is why that speed did not translate into equivalent race performance.
The possibilities identified by the evidence are clear: the car, the setup, tyre behaviour or Piastri’s ability to extract performance over a full race distance. The comparison with Norris makes the issue unavoidable. Both drivers are attempting to solve the same engineering problem, yet Norris is currently doing so more effectively.
That does not establish that Norris has greater raw talent. It does establish that, throughout 2026, Norris has shown a greater ability to translate the MCL40’s available performance into consistent lap time in qualifying and race conditions.

Piastri’s campaign cannot be reduced to bad luck, McLaren’s strategy or a simple lack of pace. All three explanations are supported, although their importance has changed as the season progressed.
Early on, reliability played a major role. The two DNS prevented Piastri from building championship momentum. Canada showed how a failure to adapt to changing conditions could turn a defensible strategic call into a costly result. Hungary demonstrated how a strategically understandable decision could still place Piastri in traffic, before a gearbox failure ended his race. Zandvoort then exposed a different weakness: competitive qualifying pace and a compromised pit stop were followed by insufficient race pace.
The statistical picture reinforces the complexity. F1’s mid-season review recorded the drivers level on race-day head-to-head results at the summer break, with each having five higher finishes than the other. Piastri is not being beaten every Sunday. Instead, Norris has created more opportunities to score heavily. When the MCL40 has been capable of a podium, Norris has more consistently put himself in position to claim it. When it has been capable of victory, he has more frequently converted that potential.

The remainder of 2026 will therefore test Piastri’s ability to turn flashes of speed into sustained results. He has already shown that he can do so on individual occasions, whether through Japan, his pace in Hungary before the gearbox failure or his strongest qualifying performances. What remains unproven is whether he can reproduce that level often enough.
McLaren have cost Piastri points. Piastri has lost points himself. The MCL40 has not always been competitive or reliable enough to fight at the front. But when the car enters its narrow performance window, Norris has more consistently found and exploited it. Piastri has the pace to match him. The defining question of the rest of the season is whether he can access it with the same regularity.
