Hadjar’s Red Bull case strengthens

Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies has indicated that Isack Hadjar is likely to remain with the team for the 2027 campaign, although no formal decision has yet been announced.

Hadjar joined the Milton Keynes-based outfit this year as the latest driver to partner Max Verstappen, following a run of candidates who struggled to deliver consistently strong results. The Frenchman, however, has made an immediate impact. His seventh consecutive top-six finish came at the Hungarian Grand Prix last Sunday, underlining the consistency that Red Bull had been missing from the second car.

That form has also helped Hadjar establish a clearer performance reference alongside Verstappen. Red Bull’s recent difficulties were evident in its challenging Hungarian qualifying session, but Hadjar’s results have nevertheless provided the team with a more dependable points-scoring presence.

Mekies praises progress alongside Verstappen

Mekies described the situation as a significant positive for the team, emphasising both Hadjar’s output and his development within Red Bull.

“It is good news that we have a strong second driver for the first time in quite a long time,” Mekies told De Telegraaf. “That was also one of our goals prior to this season. Isack is performing solidly and has learned a lot from the team and from Max.”

The comments stop short of confirming Hadjar’s future, but they clearly position him as the leading candidate to continue in the seat. Red Bull has yet to discuss the driver’s future formally, according to Mekies, but the team boss suggested that the evidence is already pointing towards a logical outcome.

“It is good news, also for Max, that our two cars are a bit closer together,” he added. “We haven't discussed the future yet, but everyone can see that Isack is doing an excellent job. So we will make a logical decision.”

Verstappen question remains

Hadjar’s position appears increasingly secure, but uncertainty remains around Verstappen’s longer-term plans despite the Dutchman having a contract in place. That leaves Red Bull with one clear positive and one unresolved question as it considers its 2027 line-up.

For now, Hadjar’s sustained run of top-six finishes and his closer proximity to Verstappen have made a compelling case for continuity. Mekies’ wording suggests Red Bull is not seeking another reset alongside its lead driver, but is instead moving towards retaining a partnership that has produced the consistency the team wanted before the season began.
