Arvid Lindblad to Start from Back of Grid After Power-Unit Change

Racing Bulls has confirmed that Arvid Lindblad will start from the back of the grid at Sepang International Circuit after the team added a fifth power unit to his allocation.
The change brings a grid penalty for the rookie, who had not taken a power-unit-related grid drop earlier this year. The announcement places Lindblad at the rear of the field for the event in Malaysia, leaving him with a recovery drive from the opening lap.

Why Lindblad faces a back-of-grid start
Formula 1 drivers are permitted a defined allocation of power-unit components across a season. The source notes that the standard limit includes four internal combustion engines, turbochargers and exhaust sets, while other elements are governed by separate allocations.
A driver taking an additional component receives a 10-place grid penalty for the first extra part, followed by a five-place drop for each subsequent new component. When a driver accumulates 15 places of grid penalties or more at a single round, the sanction becomes a start from the back of the grid.

Lindbladâs fifth power unit takes him beyond the stated allocation. The resulting penalty therefore means he will not be able to start from his qualifying position, regardless of where he qualifies. For an overview of how component allowances and sanctions feature across the season, see this guide to F1 power-unit usage and penalty rules.
A fresh challenge for the Racing Bulls rookie
With no previous power-unit grid penalty this season, this is Lindbladâs first such setback of the campaign. The back-row start makes the race a different task from a conventional weekend: his starting position is fixed by the penalty, and any progress will have to come on track.
Racing Bulls has not provided further details in the announcement quoted here. The key fact for the weekend is clear, however: Lindbladâs allocation has been extended to a fifth power unit, and he will start at the rear of the grid at Sepang International Circuit.
