George Russell: Mercedes seat never felt under threat from Max Verstappen

Russell dismisses Mercedes uncertainty
George Russell says his Mercedes seat never felt âunder threatâ from Max Verstappen, despite Toto Wolffâs sustained public interest in bringing the Red Bull driver to the team.
For several seasons, speculation suggested Russell could be forced out if Mercedes succeeded in signing Verstappen. Kimi Antonelli was widely viewed as protected within the Silver Arrows structure, leaving Russell positioned as the driver most vulnerable to the potential arrival of the four-time Formula 1 driversâ champion.

That scenario ultimately failed to materialise. Verstappen has extended his Red Bull contract through the end of 2030, bringing an extended period of uncertainty to a close. The Dutchmanâs decision followed months of speculation in which McLaren had emerged as his leading alternative, while Mercedes remained a long-standing possibility under Wolffâs leadership.
The conclusion also follows a strong 2025 campaign from Russell, who allowed his performances to carry much of the argument before securing an extension with Mercedes. That agreement gave him greater protection against losing his drive to Verstappen.

âMy seat never felt under threatâ
Russell said the issue became significant mainly because journalists repeatedly raised it, rather than because it created tension inside Mercedes.
âItâs only really a topic for us when youâre sat in front of you guys in the press, and you want to ask these questions and understand whatâs going on,â he told media.
He added that Mercedesâ internal position had remained clear, even if the teamâs conversations were more visible than negotiations involving Verstappen and other potential teams.
âIt was always very clear from within Mercedes what the reality was over these past couple of years,â Russell said. He argued that discussions between drivers and teams are a normal part of Formula 1, as every participant assesses its alternatives and contingencies.
That perspective is consistent with Mercedesâ wider approach to its line-up. The team has also refused to prioritise Russell or Antonelli in its 2026 title fight, underlining the competitive importance of both drivers.
âDrivers talk with different teams. Teams talk with different drivers. Everyone has to just see what their cards are,â Russell said. âBut my seat never felt under threat, and I felt 100 per cent security with Toto and the team, and that obviously now continues.â
