Monza may remain Formula 1’s “Temple of Speed”, but the 2026 Italian Grand Prix is set to look very different from the high-speed spectacle traditionally associated with the circuit. The introduction of the new power units has made energy management a central concern, and Monza presents one of the most difficult tests of the season.
The circuit’s long straights and relatively few braking zones limit opportunities to recover energy. The harvesting limit has therefore been reduced to 5MJ per lap, the lowest figure used so far, compared with 6MJ in Austria. The aim is to prevent excessive “super clipping” on the straights, when the MGU-K harvests energy at full throttle and the car loses speed as a result. The FIA also expects less lift-and-coast as a consequence of the lower limit.

That does not mean the electrical challenge disappears. With less energy available, cars could drain their batteries early on the straights. Once the electric motor’s assistance fades, only the internal combustion engine will remain active, meaning speeds may stabilize or begin to fall before the next braking zone.
McLaren team principal Andrea Stella and Oscar Piastri have said their simulator work showed lower top speeds at Monza than at Hungary, where energy management was not a limitation. In Budapest, the hybrid system could be used for longer and speeds exceeded 350km/h.
The reduced harvesting limit should produce less super clipping than at Silverstone, Suzuka and Melbourne, although it will not eliminate the phenomenon. Kimi Antonelli believes the situation will be “much better than we all anticipated”, while some drivers still fear they may need to downshift late on the straights to keep the engine revving.
The resulting race could place a premium on slipstreaming. Even with active aero, the effect may be powerful, as demonstrated by Max Verstappen and Isack Hadjar at Spa-Francorchamps. Aston Martin chief trackside officer Mike Krack predicted that the passing and repassing battle could resemble MotoGP.

Because recoverable energy will be limited, Overtake Mode should deliver a particularly important power boost, potentially making overtaking easier than DRS once did. That helps explain Mercedes’ decision to take an engine penalty with Antonelli at Monza, but it also creates a clear risk: using the system aggressively could leave a driver short of energy later in the lap.
The tactical “yo-yo” effect may return, with gains on one straight followed by reduced electrical assistance on the next. For more on the weekend’s wider context, see our 2026 Italian Grand Prix guide.
A further complication is that some teams have already reached their expected end-of-season downforce levels. That shortens braking distances, increases drag and reduces corner harvesting, intensifying the need for super clipping and lift-and-coast. At Monza, managing energy will be as important as chasing speed.
