WEC: Peugeot targets 2027 breakthrough with major 9X8 evolution

Peugeot has expressed a sense of âreasonable confidenceâ that its upcoming technical overhaul will transform the 9X8 into a genuine competitive force within the Hypercar class. As the manufacturer prepares for the 2027 World Endurance Championship (WEC) season, the French brand is focusing on a heavily revised version of its V6-powered Le Mans Hypercar.
Overcoming Regulatory Hurdles
The development path for the 9X8 has been fraught with challenges. Originally conceived under the initial LMH regulations, the car was designed around specific 31-inch tyre requirements. However, subsequent shifts in the rulebook intended to create convergence with IMSAâs LMDh formula forced Peugeot into significant design compromises.

Peugeot team principal Emmanuel Esnault noted that the changing technical landscape meant the original package no longer fit perfectly with the evolving regulations. While a major 2024 updateâwhich saw the team move away from ground-effects in favour of a rear wingâfailed to deliver the expected results, the team is optimistic that this next iteration will address those fundamental issues.
âAt the moment, from what we have seen on track, from the data, and from the drivers' feedback, it's looking positive,â Esnault told the media. âWe don't want to be over-optimistic. We do not take anything for granted, but it's a good base to work and to develop.â

Testing and Development Milestones
Rather than designing an entirely new chassis, Peugeot is utilizing the "evo joker" rule, which allows struggling manufacturers to implement significant upgrades. This strategic decision aims to salvage the existing platform to find the performance required to climb the championship standings.
Development is already well underway. The updated car has logged nearly 3,600km of running, including a comprehensive 24-hour simulation to identify potential reliability concerns. The testing program has seen newly-signed driver Robert Shwartzman getting hands-on with the machinery. Peugeot targets 2027 breakthrough as 9X8 enters its next development phase as they look to bridge the gap to the frontrunners.
Focus on Aerodynamic Stability
As the WEC enters an era where aerodynamic efficiency is paramount, Peugeot is dedicating immense resources to simulation and track testing. Esnault highlighted that early feedback has been particularly encouraging regarding the car's ability to absorb bumps and curbs, alongside improved aerodynamic consistency.
While the team remains cautious about the intense level of competition in the championship, Esnault remained firm on their goal for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. When asked if the 2027 update could finally resolve the 9X8's struggles at the legendary circuit, he stated: âIf I answer no, we are not doing our job. It's what we consider as a technical answer to what we have experienced this year.â
