Peugeot’s endurance legacy meets a new challenge

Peugeot is drawing on a century of long-distance racing experience as it prepares the next stage of its FIA World Endurance Championship campaign. The French marque first competed in the 24 Hours of Le Mans for the event’s fourth edition in 1926, and has since secured three outright victories at La Sarthe — in 1992, 1993 and 2009.

That history gives the current project significant weight, but the modern objective is clear: Peugeot wants the 9X8 to deliver its first Hypercar victory. The Satory-based manufacturer joined the FIA WEC’s top category midway through 2022 and has collected four podium finishes since then. However, the car remains without the breakthrough win the programme is pursuing.

The latest announcement comes as the championship continues to provide a demanding test of endurance-racing performance. Peugeot’s development effort will be closely watched in the context of a changing WEC landscape, including the replacement of the 2026 Qatar and Bahrain rounds with Barcelona and Monza.

9X8 development focused on 2027

Peugeot says the experience accumulated over the past four seasons will inform a series of forthcoming technical changes. The aim is to move the ‘Lion’ from occasional podium contender to a car capable of challenging consistently at the front.

“Since its debut, the 9X8 has been a platform in constant evolution,” commented Team Peugeot TotalEnergies Team Principal Emmanuel Esnault. “Competing at the highest level of endurance racing means continuously learning, adapting and progressing.

“The intensity of competition at world championship level reinforces our determination to keep evolving, and our objective is clear — to position the 9X8 consistently amongst the top contenders.”

Esnault added that the team’s work towards 2027 will take a revised approach to performance, efficiency and design. That programme represents an important milestone for the 9X8, with Peugeot seeking to convert its accumulated knowledge into the consistency required for a sustained fight at the sharp end of the Hypercar field.

“As we look ahead to 2027, the team is taking the next step in its development,” Esnault said. “This work is a key milestone in preparing the next chapter of the 9X8’s story and perpetuating Peugeot’s legacy in endurance racing.”

For now, the central storyline remains unchanged: Peugeot has the heritage, the podium results and an evolving platform. The missing piece is the victory that would finally end the 9X8’s search for a Hypercar breakthrough.
