Pirelli tyre choices reveal three very different tests at Zandvoort, Monza and Madrid

Pirelli has confirmed its tyre nominations for the first three Grands Prix after the summer break, selecting the middle of its range for Zandvoort and Madrid while reserving the softest available compounds for Monza.

On paper, the difference appears straightforward. In reality, the nominations reveal three contrasting strategic problems: sustained tyre loading at Zandvoort, the pressure to complete a one-stop race at Monza and a largely simulation-based calculation for Formula 1®’s first visit to Madring.

The compounds may share the same names from one weekend to another, but their behaviour will be dictated by three radically different circuit profiles.

Zandvoort: high loads on a low-grip surface

Pirelli has retained the same C2-C3-C4 selection used at Zandvoort last season.

That is a logical choice for a circuit that combines significant aerodynamic load with relatively modest asphalt grip. The tyres are subjected to sustained lateral forces through Zandvoort’s flowing middle sector, while the steep banking at Turns 3 and 14 introduces an additional vertical component that conventional circuits do not produce to the same extent.

The result is a demanding thermal cycle. The tyres are rarely given time to recover, particularly through the sequence from Scheivlak to the Hans Ernst chicane.

The C2 should provide sufficient protection against sustained loading, but the harder compound will not automatically be the preferred race tyre. Zandvoort’s low-grip surface can make warm-up difficult, especially if cool coastal conditions persist.

That creates a familiar compromise.

The C2 offers durability but may take several corners to enter its working window. The C3 should provide a more accessible balance between warm-up and longevity, while the C4 is likely to remain primarily a qualifying and short-stint option.

Sand blown across the circuit from the nearby beaches adds another variable. A dusty racing surface can temporarily reduce grip, increase sliding and accelerate surface overheating. Wind direction can also change the aerodynamic balance of the cars through the exposed, banked final corner.

Zandvoort’s challenge is therefore not simply tyre wear. It is controlling temperature while the available grip changes around the lap.

Track position will reinforce the value of strategic precision. Overtaking remains difficult on the narrow Dutch circuit, meaning an undercut could be more powerful than extending a stint for theoretical tyre-life advantage.

Monza: soft compounds do not guarantee multiple stops

Monza receives the softest combination in the 2026 range, with the C3 serving as the hard, the C4 as the medium and the C5 as the soft.

It would be easy to interpret that nomination as an attempt to generate a more aggressive multi-stop race. The circuit’s characteristics suggest otherwise.

Monza requires the lowest-downforce configurations of the season. The cars spend comparatively little time generating the sustained lateral energy seen at Zandvoort, Silverstone or Suzuka. Much of the lap is defined by full-throttle running, heavy braking and acceleration through the chicanes.

That reduces the cornering load placed on the tyres, although traction, braking stability and rear-tyre temperature remain important.

The softer selection should help teams bring the tyres into their operating window without necessarily producing excessive degradation. A similar compound range was used for the 2025 Italian Grand Prix, where tyre management and the circuit’s low-downforce demands shaped the strategic calculations.

The greater influence is the cost of making an additional pit stop.

Monza carries one of the season’s largest pit-lane time losses. Teams therefore have a strong incentive to extend their opening stint and complete the race with a single tyre change. Even a significant pace advantage on fresh tyres may not compensate for the position surrendered during a second stop.

The C3-C4-C5 nomination is best understood as an attempt to create usable strategic variation within a race that teams will still try to complete on one stop.

The C5 should be the clear qualifying tyre, but its race usefulness will depend heavily on temperature. On a cool surface, it could offer an aggressive opening stint. In high temperatures, however, thermal degradation and rear graining may make it too fragile with a full fuel load.

The C3 and C4 are therefore likely to form the core race combination. Teams will attempt to stretch one of those compounds far enough to avoid a second stop, even if doing so requires careful pace management.

The resurfacing work completed at Monza in 2024 remains relevant. As the asphalt continues to mature, its grip and abrasion characteristics should become more predictable, but high ambient temperatures could still disrupt the expected one-stop model.

Madrid: a nomination built on simulations

The most consequential selection is also the least certain.

Madrid’s new semi-permanent circuit will make its Formula 1 debut with the C2, C3 and C4. Unlike Zandvoort and Monza, Pirelli has no previous Grand Prix data from which to judge degradation, track evolution or the effectiveness of an undercut.

The decision has instead been based on circuit simulations and construction data.

Madring features 22 corners, substantial elevation changes and La Monumental, the 550-metre banked section that will become the longest corner of its type on the calendar. Pirelli’s modelling suggests that the loads will be comparable to those experienced at Silverstone and Spa-Francorchamps.

The medium compound range is therefore a conservative but rational starting point.

The C2 provides protection against high loads and potentially hot September conditions. The C3 should become the principal race tyre, while the C4 offers enough performance separation to support qualifying and shorter strategic stints.

Pirelli also expects the selection to encourage a two-stop race.

That projection should be treated as a target rather than a certainty. New circuits frequently evolve at a much faster rate than established venues. The asphalt will begin the weekend with limited rubber, meaning grip could improve significantly between Friday practice and Sunday’s race.

The effect on degradation is difficult to predict. A smooth new surface may produce limited wear but significant thermal sliding. A more abrasive finish could make tyre life shorter than simulations anticipate.

Ferrari and Charles Leclerc have already completed the first Formula 1 laps at the circuit during a filming session. That running offered an important operational milestone, but its limited mileage and controlled conditions could not provide the same data as a full race weekend.

Formula 3’s planned pre-event test may provide more useful information about grip evolution and circuit behaviour, although the characteristics of its tyres and cars cannot be transferred directly to Formula 1.

Three selections, three strategic objectives

Pirelli’s nominations reflect more than the nominal hardness of each circuit.

At Zandvoort, the C2-C3-C4 range must absorb high vertical and lateral forces while remaining usable on a relatively low-grip surface.

At Monza, the C3-C4-C5 selection provides faster warm-up and greater performance variation, but the scale of the pit-lane loss will still push teams towards a one-stop race.

Madrid represents a different exercise entirely. Pirelli has selected enough durability to protect against high loads and overheating, while leaving sufficient compound separation to make a two-stop strategy viable.

Of the three events, Madring carries the greatest uncertainty. Simulation can estimate energy loads and temperature behaviour, but it cannot perfectly reproduce a new surface, rapid track evolution, unexpected bumps or the aerodynamic consequences of running closely through La Monumental.

The selections have established the strategic framework. The circuit conditions will determine whether that framework survives first contact with the track.
