Bridgestone unveils Formula E Gen4 tyres ahead of 2026/27 return
Bridgestone has revealed the tyres it will supply as Formula E’s sole tyre partner from the 2026/27 season, marking the manufacturer’s return to an FIA world championship for the first time since leaving Formula 1 at the end of 2010.
The Japanese company presented its plans and new tyres at Formula E’s World Premiere event in Rome on Wednesday, ahead of the championship’s transition to its Gen4 car. The Gen4 era is expected to bring a substantial performance step, raising the demands on the tyre package.
Tyres developed for Gen4 performance
Formula E describes Gen4 as the fastest and most powerful car in the series’ history. It is set to reach a top speed of 335 km/h, produce peak power of 815bhp and feature permanent active all-wheel drive. The car is also capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 1.8 seconds.
Bridgestone has developed a bespoke Potenza Gen4 tyre for those conditions, with a focus on grip, durability and adaptability across different road surfaces and weather conditions worldwide. The range will also include a dedicated wet-weather tyre, named Potenza Gen4 for Typhoon, designed to provide grip in heavy rain and standing water. The source notes that a dedicated wet-weather option has been in strong demand among drivers for several years.
Sustainability at the centre of the partnership
Bridgestone says 65 per cent of each tyre is made from recycled and renewable materials. These include carbon black derived from pyrolysis oil from end-of-life tyres and silica sourced from rice husks. The natural rubber is sourced through supply chains assessed under Bridgestone’s due-diligence process and verified by a third party through the GPSNR Assurance System.
The company also says tyre production will be powered entirely by renewable energy, with low-carbon logistics used to reduce emissions further.
Bridgestone Global CEO and Representative Executive Officer Yasuhiro Morita described the Formula E agreement as a natural extension of the brand’s motorsport ambitions. “Our return to the FIA World Championship is an exciting re-entry that embodies Bridgestone’s history of passion and innovation,” he said, adding that the company aims to advance both performance and sustainability through its involvement.
Formula E CEO Jeff Dodds welcomed the manufacturer as the championship’s sole supplier from 2026/27 and beyond, citing its motorsport heritage and sustainable innovation. The partnership will begin alongside the arrival of Gen4, linking Bridgestone’s return to the FIA world championship stage with Formula E’s next car generation.
