Sainz’s Williams exit options narrow

Carlos Sainz is exploring a move away from Williams when his contract expires at the end of the 2026 season, but the most attractive alternatives may not be immediately available.

Williams began 2026 with an overweight car that lacked downforce, while delays in producing the FW48 left the team playing catch-up. There is now an acceptance at Grove that its major update package, scheduled for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in September, is unlikely to transform the season.

Red Bull interest may require patience

Audi is understood to be unavailable for 2027, with Nico Hulkenberg and Gabriel Bortoleto expected to remain in place. Sainz is also said to hold strong interest in Aston Martin and Alpine, should either team have a seat available.

Red Bull has now emerged as a potential destination. However, according to Gazzetta dello Sport, the move could become a ‘real option’ only from 2028. Red Bull reportedly does not want to change its 2027 line-up, leaving Isack Hadjar alongside Max Verstappen for another season.

That would force Sainz to decide whether to remain at Williams for an additional year while waiting for a possible opening at Milton Keynes. Holding out would carry significant risk if Aston Martin or Alpine offers him a seat for 2027.

Alonso decision could shape the market

Sainz’s most intriguing immediate route may depend on Fernando Alonso’s plans. Alonso is expected to monitor Aston Martin’s upgrades after the summer break before deciding his future, with Honda due to upgrade the team’s engine. Recent speculation has also linked him with a possible return to Alpine.

Aston Martin owner Lawrence Stroll is reportedly considering Sainz as his leading target to replace Alonso. If Alonso stays, Alpine could instead replace Franco Colapinto with Sainz, potentially offering a one-year contract for 2027. That arrangement could leave the door open to Audi or Red Bull in 2028.

For now, Sainz’s Red Bull ambition appears possible—but not straightforward. The choice is between securing a competitive seat for 2027 and gambling on a future opportunity that may not materialise.
