The Circuit of The Americas hosts the United States Grand Prix this weekend, with the race marking Round 18 of the 2026 season. The Austin venue blends fast direction changes with technical corners, and its steep climb into Turn 1 sets up one of the most distinctive opening sequences on the calendar.

COTA’s layout rewards precision as well as speed

The circuit measures 5.513km, with 20 turns and a 56-lap race distance of 308.405km. Its lap record is 1m 36.169s, set by Charles Leclerc in 2019.

Opened to Formula 1 in 2012, COTA was the first purpose-built F1 venue in the United States. Its arrival brought the championship back to the country after a five-year gap. Architect Hermann Tilke designed a layout drawing inspiration from famous corners elsewhere, including Silverstone’s Maggots and Becketts and Hockenheim’s stadium section.

The inaugural Austin race went to Lewis Hamilton, who passed Sebastian Vettel for what proved to be his final win with McLaren before joining Mercedes. Hamilton remains COTA’s most successful driver, with five victories. He also secured two of his seven world titles at the circuit, in 2015 and 2019.

Former Renault driver Jolyon Palmer has highlighted the challenge of linking the opening sector before braking at the end of the long back straight. The Turn 13-to-15 complex is another demanding stretch, with the Turn 14 area placing significant load on the tyres. Track limits at Turn 19 and traction out of the final corner add further tests. Two Straight Mode zones and one Overtake detection point

COTA has two designated Straight Mode areas: between Turns 11 and 12, and along the start/finish straight from Turn 20 towards Turn 1. In dry conditions, the configuration changes between lower drag on designated straights and greater downforce through corners.

The circuit’s Overtake Mode detection point is on the exit of Turn 20, with the activation line on the start/finish straight. Drivers can use the mode on the following lap if they are within one second of the car ahead at detection. The updated Austin track map shows the two Straight Mode zones.

Austin’s weekend brings more than the Grand Prix

F1 ACADEMY returns to COTA for the first time since its inaugural 2023 season, with three races scheduled across the weekend. Mercedes holds the venue’s team win record with five victories, ahead of Red Bull on four. The circuit is also unveiling a 75-foot cowboy hat attraction, with a themed bar beneath it, in the Lone Star Land fan area.
