Hadjar wants F1 cooling vests banned despite heat concerns

Isack Hadjar has called for Formula 1 to ban cooling vests, arguing that drivers should face the physical demands of racing without artificial cooling. His Red Bull team-mate Max Verstappen also rejected using the equipment, citing its practical drawbacks and limited effectiveness.
The subject resurfaced at the Singapore Grand Prix after extreme heat and humidity at the previous weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia. Drivers have been divided: some welcome the cooling systems, while others question how well they work and how comfortable they are.

Hadjar argues the challenge should remain part of racing
Hadjar’s position is that the strain of racing in hot conditions is part of the sport, and that cooling aids should not be allowed. He made his view clear when asked about the mixed response among drivers in Singapore, saying the sport is meant to be physically tough.
The systems circulate cooled liquid through tubes in a fireproof top worn under the race suit. Their performance can fade during a race, however: as the cockpit heats up, the liquid in the tubes also warms. Some drivers have also raised concerns about fit and whether the equipment delivers a meaningful benefit.
Verstappen says the vest brings drawbacks without lasting relief
Verstappen said he would not use a vest even if it stayed cool throughout a grand prix. He considers it unnecessary, and said the cables inside the car can restrict a driver’s movement. He also questioned whether the system could provide cooling for the full race, saying he had not seen it do so in any category.

Where a heat hazard is declared, teams and drivers can choose to wear their own cooling vest or carry ballast instead. That option is intended to prevent a weight disadvantage for drivers who use the equipment.
The disagreement leaves the grid split over whether cooling technology is a useful response to extreme conditions or an unwanted addition to the cockpit. For more on the Red Bull driver, read our coverage of Hadjar’s return to the car and updates on his fitness.
