A WEC hybrid Hypercar combines a combustion engine with an electric motor, battery and control systems. The challenge is to recover and deploy energy while respecting the car's permitted performance.

The 2026 Hypercar category includes different hybrid architectures, alongside the non-hybrid Aston Martin Valkyrie.

How do Hypercars recover energy?

During braking, the motor-generator can convert part of the car's kinetic energy into electrical energy. That electricity is stored in the battery and can subsequently be used to drive the wheels.

Mechanical brakes still play a vital role. Regenerative braking and conventional braking must work together to give the driver a controllable car.

This recovery-and-deployment cycle is repeated around the lap.

What is different about LMH and LMDh hybrids?

Hybrid LMH cars use a manufacturer-specific system acting on the front axle. The combustion engine drives the rear wheels, allowing four-wheel drive when electric deployment is permitted.

Ferrari's 499P is one example. Its front motor-generator and battery form part of the car's integrated hybrid powertrain.

LMDh cars use a common hybrid system acting through the rear drivetrain. They remain rear-wheel drive, with standard electrical and transmission components supplied through the category's designated partners.

The different approaches help explain the engineering variety in the WEC Hypercar field.

Does electrical power come on top of the power limit?

The regulated total output includes the engine and electric motor together. Hybrid deployment is not permission to exceed the car's overall power allowance.

Control systems coordinate the contribution of each power source. LMH front-axle deployment also has regulatory restrictions; it is not available without conditions at every corner.

Is battery charge the virtual energy tank?

Battery charge and virtual stint energy measure different things. Battery charge describes stored electrical energy. The virtual energy tank tracks the remaining allowance for propulsion energy over the stint.

Deploying recovered electricity still contributes to the measured propulsion output. Recovering battery charge does not automatically restore the stint allowance.

Our virtual energy tank explainer describes that distinction in detail.

Why does hybrid management matter?

Teams must coordinate braking, battery charge, deployment and fuel use. The objective is repeatable race pace within the rules, rather than simply emptying the battery whenever the driver wants more speed.
