Hamilton Handed Three-Place Grid Drop After Impeding Piastri in Hungary

Hamilton loses front-row start after qualifying incident

Lewis Hamilton has been handed a three-place grid penalty for impeding Oscar Piastri during qualifying for the Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix. The Ferrari driver will therefore start Sunday’s race from fifth rather than second, promoting Charles Leclerc, Kimi Antonelli and Piastri by one position each.

The incident occurred near the end of the final Q3 shootout. Hamilton was travelling slowly on the main straight after completing a fast lap, while Piastri was approaching on a flying lap. Hamilton remained on the racing line, unaware that the McLaren was closing quickly, forcing Piastri to take avoiding action and abandon his final attempt.

Stewards blame unnecessary obstruction

The FIA stewards described Car 44 as travelling at a “significantly reduced speed” on the racing line while Car 81 was on a push lap. They noted Hamilton’s explanation that he had completed a fast lap and had not received the team’s radio message until Piastri was already in close proximity. Hamilton also said that the position of his Ferrari meant Piastri was not visible in his mirrors.

The stewards concluded that Piastri had been forced to run wide and abort the lap, determining that Hamilton had “unnecessarily impeded” the McLaren during qualifying. The standard three-place grid drop followed.

Piastri was direct in his assessment of the moment. “I saw him from the start line, expecting him to get out of the way and I watched him basically all the way up until I nearly hit him. So, yeah, a shame.”

Ferrari accepts responsibility

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur said the team would take responsibility for the communication failure, rather than placing the blame solely on Hamilton.

“We told him, but far too late. If there is a mistake, it's our mistake,” Vasseur told Sky.

Hamilton’s revised starting position leaves Ferrari with Leclerc ahead of him on the grid, while Piastri gains a place after losing his final qualifying lap to the obstruction.
