Max Günther targets Formula E world title as GEN4 era approaches
Günther focused on GEN4 despite uncertain future
Max Günther has set his sights on becoming Formula E World Champion while preparing to leave DS Penske at the end of the season. The German driver’s next destination remains unclear, although speculation continues to link him with Envision Racing for the 2026/27 campaign.
Günther’s comments come as DS prepares for its final Formula E appearance at the London E-Prix. The team will run a special gold livery for the double-header, marking the end of its time in the championship. “Obviously DS leaving Formula E is quite emotional for many of us,” Günther told journalists. “For me, it has been a proud moment to be part of DS’s history — adding more wins and more pole positions to their record in Formula E has been truly special.”

A difficult final GEN3 campaign
Günther has spent two seasons with DS Penske, winning twice during his debut campaign. His second season has been considerably more difficult. With a best finish of sixth at the season opener in Brazil and Sanya, he sits 18th in the standings with 23 points.
The driver believes the team extracted its maximum over one lap, but race performance proved more complicated. “The package, especially on the efficiency side, left us compromised in the races,” he said. “Weekend by weekend we really extracted the best from the car over one lap, and credit to the team for that, but the races were much more complicated for us.”
Despite the lost opportunity, Günther insisted he had no regrets. His GEN3 record includes four victories and eight podiums, adding to the success he enjoyed during the previous GEN2 era. However, a world championship has remained beyond his reach, with seventh place in 2022/23 his best overall result.
Ambition remains unchanged
The GEN4 era will begin in December, with cars expected to deliver a more aggressive appearance and a top speed of 200mph. Günther is enthusiastic about the change, but recognises that success will depend on finding the right competitive environment.
“Ultimately my goal is to win a world championship here in Formula E — that’s definitely my ambition for the future,” he said. “GEN4 is going to be great, though it will also depend on where you land in the competitive order and whether you’re in the right car.”
Günther returns to the track for DS Penske’s final Formula E race at the London E-Prix, with the first race of the double-header scheduled for Saturday 15 August at 15:05 local time.
