
Mercedes has unveiled the new Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+, which will make its Formula 1 debut as the official safety car at this weekend’s Hungarian Grand Prix.
The car becomes the 14th official safety car supplied by Mercedes-Benz, arriving as the manufacturer marks 30 years of providing the vehicle for Formula 1. The new model is also notable for being the first safety car equipped with variable all-wheel drive. Power comes from a biturbo 4.0-litre V8 producing 612bhp and maximum torque of 850Nm, while its stated output reaches 450kW. That combination is intended to provide the performance required when the safety car must control the field without compromising the stability demanded by circuit operation.
Mercedes has refined the car’s aerodynamics with what it describes as “highly efficient aerodynamics”. The package includes a new front splitter, a modified rear wing with an active flap and front dive planes.

Together, these changes are designed to improve stability through high-speed corners and increase downforce over the front axle. The emphasis is clear: the new safety car is not simply a road-going performance model, but a machine adapted to provide a stable and responsive platform during race neutralisations.
The GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ is fitted with advanced FIA-specific systems, including radio, GPS and camera technology, alongside a dedicated centre console. It also carries a roll cage, six-point safety harness and racing bucket seats.
The car will run on “ultra-high performance” Pirelli P Zero tyres, completing a specification built around control, communication and traction in demanding conditions.
Safety car driver Bernd Maylander highlighted the car’s response and traction after assessing its performance.
“Its agile and direct response to driver inputs is spot on. It is the first safety car with all-wheel drive. This provides optimum traction, which is particularly noticeable when combined with all the other technical features.”
Maylander added that the system “really comes into its own when cornering and accelerating” and described the Mercedes as “an exceptional road car”. He will drive it for the first time in real-world conditions in Hungary.
