Red Bull prepares for a major change beside Verstappen

Max Verstappen could have a new voice on his radio at selected races in 2026, with Tom Hart reportedly in line to replace Gianpiero Lambiase as his race engineer.

The timing means the team will already be considering how to protect its engineering structure, with Lambiase potentially excluded from some meetings as the transition approaches. The situation also comes as Red Bull manages a broader series of departures from its senior ranks.

Hart emerges as the leading candidate

According to De Telegraaf, Hart is expected to assume the role. The Briton previously worked as Verstappen’s performance engineer before moving into a position covering both Verstappen and Isack Hadjar. He had reportedly been due to leave Red Bull at the end of the year for Williams, but that move has now allegedly been cancelled.

Hart’s promotion would represent a significant change in responsibility. A performance engineer is primarily focused on preparing the car, analysing data and working with the race engineer on balance changes, tyre strategy and set-up direction across a weekend. The role is centred on preparation rather than constant real-time communication with the driver.

A race engineer operates in a very different environment. They become the driver’s main point of contact, converting high-pressure radio exchanges into instructions for the garage while responding to frustrations, doubts and instincts as they emerge. The job demands technical understanding, but also trust, judgement and man-management.

A new relationship to build

Hart and Verstappen already know each other, but the promotion would fundamentally alter their working dynamic. Hart would move from a largely data-led role into becoming the voice guiding Verstappen through every session and every lap of a Grand Prix weekend.

That relationship cannot be created instantly. Verstappen has previously suggested that his future could be linked to Lambiase remaining beside him, underlining the importance of continuity in the role. Hart may therefore take over at selected 2026 races while the pair establish a new working relationship.
