Aston Martin forced to the back of the grid in Baku due to Honda component penalties
The reliability struggles continuing to plague the Aston Martin-Honda partnership have reached a breaking point ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. Both Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll will start from the back of the grid following a series of heavy penalties incurred from installing fresh power unit components.
Severe Penalties for Alonso and Stroll
The decision to refresh the power units across both cars follows a season already defined by Honda's reliability woes, which prevented either driver from maintaining their seasonal allocation.
Fernando Alonso faces a significant mountain to climb. As he exceeds his allowance for the first time this season, he will fit a fifth V6 engine and a new turbocharger, triggering 10-place penalties for each. An additional five-place penalty will be applied for a ninth set of ancillary components.
Lance Stroll's situation is even more dire regarding cumulative grid drops. The Canadian driver is taking a sixth turbo, seventh battery, sixth control electronics unit, and eighth set of ancillary components. Having already exceeded his allowance on those four specific elements, Stroll has been handed four separate five-place penalties, totaling 20 places. While regulations state that any penalty exceeding 15 places results in a back-of-the-grid start, for Aston Martin, this is a mathematical certainty.
Challenging Practice Sessions in Baku
The technical setbacks have been mirrored by poor performance on track during the opening practice sessions at the Baku City Circuit. Both Aston Martin drivers finished at the bottom of the timing sheets in FP2.
Alonso's session was particularly abbreviated; the two-time world champion managed just nine laps before his car was retired to the garage due to a suspected oil leak on the power unit.
In contrast, the front of the pack has been dominated by Mercedes. George Russell set a commanding pace to lead FP2, followed closely by his championship-leading teammate Kimi Antonelli. This strength from the Silver Arrows comes as they continue to show significant dominance during the Baku practice sessions.
