Lando Norris wins the Dutch Grand Prix as Max Verstappen crashes out
Norris masters a disrupted Zandvoort race
Lando Norris converted pole position into a commanding victory at the Dutch Grand Prix, producing a composed drive through changing conditions to finish 11.5 seconds ahead of Kimi Antonelli. George Russell completed the podium for Mercedes.
The result was shaped before the opening lap had even settled. Despite rain before the start, the entire field chose slick tyres. Norris made the better launch, while Antonelli passed Russell at Turn 1. Max Verstappenâs home race then ended dramatically: he dipped a tyre onto the inside white line at the final corner, spun and hit the barrier. The Red Bull caused extensive debris and brought out the red flag, apologising over team radio. Gabriel Bortoleto also spun at the banking but avoided damage.
A second standing start followed after Oliver Bearman suffered an engine failure on the formation lap. Norris was unable to retain the lead, with Antonelli squeezing past at Turn 1. The Mercedes driverâs medium tyres initially proved more effective than Norrisâs softs, while Russell lost third place to Oscar Piastriâs hard-shod McLaren.
The earlier Dutch GP strategy guide had highlighted the importance of tyre decisions, and the race delivered precisely that strategic tension.
Pit stops reshape the order
Russell struggled for pace and reported balance problems while Charles Leclerc applied pressure. Mercedes stopped him for hard tyres on lap 18, with McLaren pitting Piastri one lap earlier. A slow 5.4-second stop dropped Piastri behind Russell and allowed Antonelli to build a 2.2-second advantage over Norris.
After the frontrunners completed their first stops, all opted for hard tyres except Leclerc, who used mediums. Leclerc eventually won his long duel with Piastri on lap 34, passing the McLaren around the outside of Turn 3. Lewis Hamilton then moved ahead of Piastri and closed on Ferrari team-mate Leclerc, despite sarcastically criticising Ferrariâs handling of the battle.
Hamiltonâs alternative strategy briefly put him first on track, but the effective lead remained with Antonelli. On lap 54, Norris passed Antonelli around the outside of Turn 1 before taking the actual lead from Hamilton at Turn 11. A virtual safety car caused by Esteban Ocon then triggered another strategic split: Hamilton and Antonelli took soft tyres, while Norris and Russell stayed out on hards.
Mercedes eventually instructed Russell to let Antonelli through on lap 65. Russell resisted Hamiltonâs late charge, holding third despite a further brief VSC for debris. Norris won by 15.8 seconds, with Antonelli 4.3 seconds clear of Russell.
Hamilton finished fourth, ahead of Leclerc, Piastri, Liam Lawson, Nico Hulkenberg, Fernando Alonso and Pierre Gasly. Antonelli leaves the Netherlands with a 59-point championship lead over Russell and Hamilton.
