McLaren believes Ferrari has a significant race-pace advantage at Zandvoort

Ferrari’s sprint pace raises the stakes

Ferrari’s performance in the Zandvoort sprint has given its Formula 1 rivals plenty to study. Charles Leclerc, in particular, looked comfortable with the Scuderia’s set-up direction and converted an aggressive tyre choice into second place behind George Russell.

“I think the lap times of Ferrari in continuous laps that they showed during practice one, they were the best,” Stella said. “And probably in the race, Leclerc was still the best in terms of pace.”

Qualifying leaves Ferrari exposed

Ferrari would normally welcome a car that performs better in race trim than in qualifying. At Zandvoort, however, that balance is less valuable because the tight and twisty circuit makes overtaking difficult.

Leclerc qualified sixth, 0.395 seconds off pole and 0.064s behind team-mate Lewis Hamilton. He acknowledged that Ferrari’s relative strength is not necessarily an advantage at this track.

“We’re trying to make the car as fast as possible, but for the characteristics we have it works a little bit better in the race than in qualifying,” Leclerc said. “I prefer that way than the other way, but on a track like this, it doesn’t help.”

With the Dutch Grand Prix expected to be a straightforward one-stop race, Ferrari’s challenge is clear: turn its pace into track position before traffic neutralises the advantage. The team has preserved a new set of soft tyres for both drivers, unlike its direct rivals, creating flexibility at the start and in the first pit-stop window.

That strategic question is also central to this Dutch Grand Prix strategy guide, particularly after the sprint exposed rear-grip concerns.

Ferrari team principal Fred Vasseur pointed to that flexibility after qualifying. “We save one set of new [soft] tyres for tomorrow and we are the only one on the first three rows,” he said. “The race pace was good this morning. It means that we can push and try to do better tomorrow.”

Ferrari has the pace to trouble the leaders. Whether it can escape the traffic will decide if that advantage matters.
