Red Bull faces development dilemma after major 2026 F1 fightback
Red Bullâs progress comes at a cost
Red Bull heads into the Formula 1 summer break fourth in the constructorsâ championship, but its position does not fully reflect the teamâs progress since the season opener in Melbourne.
Data from partner Paceteq shows that Red Bull was as much as 1.3 seconds per lap short of the outright race pace in Australia and China. At that stage, the Milton Keynes-based team was fighting around Haas and Alpine rather than the front of the field. By the final two race weekends before the break, however, the deficit had been reduced to between two and three tenths per lap.
That represents a gain of roughly one second relative to the leaders. The improvement, though, has required an aggressive development push with significant financial and strategic consequences.
Two major upgrade packages
Red Bull introduced substantial upgrade packages in Miami and Austria, revising its aerodynamic concept significantly. The sidepods, among other areas, adopted a completely different appearance, while the team also addressed excess weight on the RB22.
The scale of that effort prompted debate in the paddock. Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff questioned how Ferrari appeared able to deliver âunlimitedâ upgrades, while Ferrari suggested that Red Bull may actually have introduced even more new parts across the opening 11 race weekends.
Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies now accepts that maintaining the same development rate will be difficult during the second half of the season. That challenge is directly linked to Formula 1âs budget cap, set at $215 million this year.
âWe have brought a huge amount of development to the car between race one and here, in order to try to as soon as possible correct the large deficit we initially had,â Mekies said. âAnd itâs probably difficult to imagine that we will continue at that rhythm. But we nonetheless need to see what is the best way to try and close these last three tenths.â
Those final tenths are particularly difficult to find, Mekies has previously explained, not least because the opposition is continuing to develop. Red Bullâs recent qualifying difficulties in Hungary underline how narrow the margin remains despite the broader improvement.
A different balance for next season
The team must also decide when to shift resources, including wind-tunnel time, from this yearâs car to next seasonâs challenger. Mekies says Red Bull is taking a different approach from last year, when it devoted everything to closing the gap to McLaren and supporting Max Verstappenâs title challenge.
That commitment was later identified by technical director Pierre Wache as a factor behind Red Bullâs difficulties at the start of 2026. This time, Mekies expects the switch towards next seasonâs car to happen earlier, shaped by the regulations and the need to avoid repeating last yearâs cost.
